Looking for wonderfully well-adjusted young dog – but full of fun, too? Meet Pongo! This long and sleek, shiny black, always smiling young Border Collie mix was bounced around from home to home for being “too energetic”, and finally landed in a Wyoming shelter, who called WBCR. With some regular exercise, attention, and training, Pongo has proven to be just a remarkable fellow. He’s a go with the flow kind of kiddo who greets every new day with contagious enthusiasm.
Pongo is a perfect combination of sweet and kind AND happy energy and fun! This is one special pup and it’s impossible not to fall in love with him. He is friendly and courteous to everyone he meets, has never known a stranger, and is oh-so-affectionate; he loves to love on his people. He is a bigger guy, around 50 lbs. and a perfect weight for his size and also a perfect height for lots of petting! Despite this healthy 50 pounds, he is pretty sure he’s a lap dog. Pongo is equally sociable with other dogs, gets along fabulously with all he encounters, and is quite playful with his canine buddies who are game. He has taken to toys – especially squeaky ones - and will play with them for self entertainment when bored. He is learning to fetch and is doing very well despite his foster brother who doesn’t always like to share! Pongo is not a particularly herdy fellow, and has learned to coexist with horses. Cats are an unknown. He loves being outdoors - hiking, running, bike rides, dog parks, goofing off in the yard or chewing a bone – Pongo loves it all!
Pongo is so well adjusted he just goes with the flow whether its super intense fun play or just hanging out watching tv. Yes, Pongo loves his down time as much as play time but if he is not ready for down time its okay as long there are toys for him to entertain himself with! He is very athletic and agile so will do well with an outdoor sports enthusiast, or possibly dog sports like agility. He is definitely a higher energy boy who will need a good chunk of vigorous physical exercise daily to be happiest and at his best. And yes – he’s a character! Pongo is a talker and makes the strangest sounds (think Chewbacca!) when playing or if he wants attention, or even in his sleep. He also will come bark at you if his foster brother steals his toy - we think he is tattling!
All this and brains too? You betcha! Although he arrived at WBCR not knowing much, Pongo is a smart pup and a fast learner. He’s housetrained, enjoys hanging out in his crate although not officially cratetrained, walks well on a leash, and has learned some of the basics too. He has good recall – except if those tempting squirrels are around! Pongo adjusts to all situations with a little guidance - he just needs to be shown what is appropriate and what isn’t. Like many BCs, he does have a few things that frighten him – such as radio static and some things on tv, and creepy new objects such as those terrible laundry detergent containers! He will benefit from adopters who will continue with his manners training and exposure to the world, and who will also be sensitive to his few specific fears.
All in all, Pongo has all the makings of one terrific canine companion. Given his sunny nature and go with the flow attitude, he is suitable to a variety of situations. If you are looking for a gem with a heart of gold to join you on a lifetime of adventure – Pongo may be the one for you!
