My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Chansu (chahn-sue), which means "chance" in Japanese is a 4-5 year old pure bred diluted Red male Shiba Inu. He was found as a stray in Columbus Missouri and was transferred to our rescue because he was at risk of being put to sleep. Chansu came in with severe hair loss and a yeast infection all over his skin and was not a candidate for adoption through the shelter.

The second picture is Chansu at the vet two days after coming to rescue. You can see the hairloss on his legs and a bit on his toes and the right side of his face. Also on his back legs, too.

Since coming to rescue Chansu has received a full panel allergy test. The great news is he has no food allergies! He has some environmental allergies, mainly to ragweed. He is mildly allergid to grasses, flea saliva and yellow dock, but ragweed is by far the highest. Just the change from Missouri to Colorado will help him significantly. Ongoing treatment may be the occassional steroidal shot to ease his symptoms, possibly in conjunction with Benadryl or Claritin.

Chansu is just the greatest dog ever! He gets along great with men, women and children. He was even fostered for his first week in rescue at the Director's house and was around her newborn baby. Chansu didn't even care when the baby would scream. He would even gently lay his head down next to the baby asking for pets from the Director but never on the baby herself. Besides being super affectionate, Chansu also likes playing fetch. He even lets the Director's 3 year old daughter take a ball out of his mouth with no problems.

Chansu is also good with dogs of all sizes as the Director has a Saint Bernard, Shiba, and Shih tzu. He also attended a Shiba meetup group with 15 other dogs and no issues. He doesn't outright play with dogs though yet but we bet that would come in time. He has been fostered with cats and while good with them, if they run or he's bored he may chase them. But told "uh uh" or "leave it" and he listens well.

Chansu is potty trained and doing well with crate training. He is currently now being fostered in an apartment and while he did whine at the Director's house, he has been nothing but quiet now that he gets more one on one time. He even will put himself to bed in the crate when he is ready for a nap or bedtime with the door open. He has also been fostered with chain link fencing and does well with no attempts to escape. If left in the yard for longer than a potty break he will either ask back in by scratching at the door or if it's nice out he will find a sun patch and sun bathe. We do not approve of leaving dogs outside if no one is home.

Chansu also loves being brushed and doesn't mind the blow drier either! In fact he stretches his back and neck totally out while you're doing it. And when you do his sides he leans into it.

Chansu's adoption fee is reduced slightly to $250.00 since there is some minor ongoing care that will need to be taken in regards to his allergies when they flare up mentioned in the second paragraph. He is neutered, microchipped, dewormed, vaccinated for distemper and rabies and will come with a 6 week professional training course at a local facility to the adopter.
