My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Yes, she's as good as she looks! In fact, this 3 year old purebred Black and Tan Coonhound just keeps getting better by the day. They say a Coonhound is a cross between the Bloodhound and the Foxhound. Throw a little Beagle in there for playfulness and you've got Hailey! Now that she has been with us over a week, we realize that she's not just a dog, but she's a clown as well. Who knew? Hailey was about to loose her life in an overcrowded shelter in Georgia when we saw an email about her. She was a favorite among the staff and when we decided to make a little room for Hailey, there was much rejoicing. Because she is so strong and beautiful, she was probably used as a breeding dog before she was discarded and picked up as a stray. She recently arrived in NYC and her foster mom immediately took her to a huge enclosed field in Central Park. It was there that she understood where the name "Coonhound" came from. Once her leash came off, Hailey's nose hit the earth and within seconds she was following the "scent". Minutes later she isolated the area where raccoons nest. She was beyond excited...letting out a series of bays and howls that have never before been heard in NYC! Her foster mom smiled as she leashed the happy dog. She came home and Hailey slept like a baby. We thought it would be great for Hailey to have a family that could provide her with an opportunity to show off her hunting skills once in a while. The next day Hailey was out exploring again when she saw a large black dog and mistaking him for a bear, she let out one of those amazing barks that alerts the city. Imitating her bark, her foster mom barked back at her. Hailey turned to face her and with tail wagging and barked back. Her foster mom gave it right back to her. Hailey was thrilled. Her whole rear end was wagging as she jumped up and came down on her front paws...howling with joy. Does this girl like to play! Each day, our 55 lbs girl is getting more socialized with the others members in her foster home and loves to run through the house with them trying hard to beat them to the front door. She lives for her walks and if given enough exercise, she comes home and sleeps, dreaming about raccoons of course! Se can be a little stubborn and independent when out on the trail, she takes her "work" seriously, but when it's time to come home, she is calm and happy to be with her family. She is both gentle and tolerant of children and her tail starts wagging as soon as she sees them. In fact, this charmer seems to like all people, even the loud abrasive drunk on the corner! And they like her right back. For Hailey is a sweet and gentle angel with spirit to spare. Aside from being housebroken, she is healthy, up to date with her shots and about to be spayed.
