My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

BECKETT is a 2 year old black male who weighs 72 pounds. He is a very happy, playful, highly interactive, inquisitive lab! He's quite active and athletic, yet settles well in the house when needed. he loves to play fetch and constantly carries stuffed toys around the house and yard. If you sit down for a moment, he will gladly "gift" you with one! Beckett knows most commands and doesn't need a crate. We are working on his counter surfing - he will closely and energetically "snoopervise" meal preparation, and when left alone in the presence of food he will make it disappear. He does well with other dogs of all sizes; however, he would be best in a home with a fenced yard as he will chase them as well as small backyard animals such as rabbits, birds and squirrels. Beckett does not disturb your personal things, such as shoes, books, and other non-food items. Beckett is a very LOVING lab and will make a wonderful companion for some lucky family! He is approved for kids 10 and up.

Update from foster (12/20): Beckett aka Ferris is settling in nicely. He definitely has puppy energy and loves toys and to play fetch. He needs training but is eager to please. He and his foster sister enjoy playing chase around the backyard. He crates well and is house trained. He knows the basic commands.

Update from foster (12/18): Beckett is playing with our dog. Very energetic and active. Good in the crate. Strong on the leash. He plays very well at the dog park. He needs a fenced yard where he can burn off his energy and he needs a family that will continue with his obedience training and make sure he gets a lot of exercise.

Previous Adopter comments: He is very attentive to his people and eager to please. He has excellent house manners and can be trusted loose in the house. I have left him up to 3 hours. He sleeps on the dog bed next to our bed, but would prefer to be on our bed. He has improved on the leash, though walks can be challenging. He does not disturb human items, but will be happy to clean off the counters if I forget to when I leave the house.

In the first couple of weeks with us, Beckett had a lot of nervous energy. The longer he is here, the more relaxed he becomes. He settles in to our routine and watches us carefully for clues about the next event. He loves to be groomed, loves tummy rubs and long satisfying stretches.

Beckett's favorite thing in the world is fetch, and he will play as long as you are willing. Tennis balls are no match for him...definitely needs kong or other sturdy toys. He is friendly to other dogs and may do best in a home with a confident pet to help him understand his pack better. He is happy at the dog park and with play dates with other dogs, but hard to handle when he meets another dog when he is on the leash. He is not a fan of the gentle leader - he doesn't like the band across his nose, and I found it was too distracting when training, though it certainly curtailed the behavior. He shows no interest in squirrels or rabbits; we have not encountered cats.

We have found Beckett does best with grain free dog food and limited, meat, dog treats for training. Hot dogs work well, and don't seem to upset his digestive tract.

Beckett has traveled often with me, and is happy and quiet in the car. He has been crated previously, but not much with us. He prefers the hard sided crate, not the soft collapsible ones.

Beckett is happiest with just a couple people in his "family". He feels stressed and fearful by the presence of strangers and by big changes to the household routine. Short (day long) visits seem to be fine...longer and overnight visits not so much.

Oct 3, 2013: Beckett is an amazing dog! We're working on his listening skills and commands, but he's extremely loving and friendly. He is always looking to cuddle up next to you or have his head/belly scratched. He would probably be great in a home with another dog as he loves playing with other dogs! He also is great on his own and will lay down and chew his bone for lengthy periods of time. He loves to be outside and go on long walks or head to the dog park! He is becoming a little more vocal if left outside or if someone is at the door and definitely seems to be more comfortable and at home!

Beckett needs a home where his family is willing to:

Work with him; Someone is home or has a pet sitter to let him out regularly, (at least every three to four hours) to allow him to go out and urinate; Where he will be active and engaged and provided with mind-engaging toys, games and training to keep him active; Where he will be given a job to do where he will learn many new things, such as becoming a therapy dog, or participating in agility, obedience, tracking, dock diving or other dog sports.

It will be well worth the effort, because this is one very special Labrador Retriever! Beckett is a very LOVING Lab and will make a wonderful canine companion for some lucky family!
