My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sweet Gotti has recently become the victim of a broken home. His owners have permanently separated after 13 years and his "mommy" is struggling to give this special boy the attention and care he so deserves. Gotti has spent the last 4 years being one of the best things to have ever happened to her and her heart is broken because her new circumstances are preventing her from keeping the promises she made to him.

Gotti has been living with 4 cats in a small NYC apartment, leaving them, their food and their toys alone. He was told from day one that they were not to be messed with and they have coexisted with a mutual understanding of, "we'll leave you alone if you leave us alone and vice versa."

As far as other dogs go, most he chooses to ignore, occasionally he will show interest in a stop and sniff, and a select few he will play with a bit. He does not like barkers. If he feels uncomfortable with a dog, then his instinct is to walk away. He can be easily overwhelmed by an encounter with multiple dogs, so instead of going into dog runs he will hang out on the other side of the fence, watch and maybe say hello to curious dogs inside.

Gotti lives for the tennis B-A-L-L. His most favorite past time is fetching with intervals of rest and ball chewing until he catches his breath for more. When the ball is out, he is totally focused, but to the point where he will be aggressive to any dog that tries to intervene. People love the show he puts on in the park when he is playing. He runs, he jumps, he chases and he catches the ball in his mouth. He will even show off his knowledge of commands: bring it, drop it, leave it, stay, wait, get it, down, sit, relax.

Gotti knows how to spend a lazy Sunday in front of the TV, but requires as much outside time as he can get. He would love to have a yard to roll around in the grass, but manages well living in the city with frequent trips to the park. Gotti has spent time in the summer at the beach and while he is not a strong swimmer, he would chase the tide, roll in the sand or fetch his ball in shallow, calm water. He never seemed to mind napping on the deck on the lounge chair either. In the winter, he becomes an even more playful pup, loving the colder weather, and will play in the snow as long as you let him.

Gotti is not built for long distance running, but will happily trot along for a 2-3 mile run. On trails he will stay pretty close off leash, won't chase squirrels, and if he is distracted by a smell then he'll sprint to catch up. He can be a bit of a cheat with racing, often taking a head start after you say "on your mark, get set. . ." and not waiting for "go!"

Gotti is curb trained, has never chewed anything that wasn't given to him, enjoys playing tug of war (on command. . .and will drop it, leave it, sit, and get it as told) and keeps himself busy with his indoor toys, especially gnawing raw bones. His favorite snacks are "cookies", although they are given sparingly to avoid a weight issue and so he happily accepts most raw veggies instead. Carrots are his favorite, with broccoli a close second!

Gotti loves going for car rides and gets very excited when bags are being packed to go on a trip. He readily jumps in the back seat or back area of a wagon and spends his time looking out the window as well as napping along the way. Gotti does not have any experience with young children and typically ignores them or walks away when an introduction is attempted. Thunderstorms don't seem to bother him much and he doesn't mind trips to the vet. Many people who claim to not like "bully breeds" quickly make exception upon meeting Gotti. He is a people dog and thrives in the company of the people he considers his. Because he is smart and loyal, he needs a person or family that will be the "alpha" for his "pack". He is not a barker, but will alert you if he hears strange, new noises. He knows to walk behind you going through doors, or when walking up or down stairs, but occasionally needs a gentle "wait" reminder.

Gotti is the perfect companion for the person who loves having a loyal and loving dog at his or her side. He wants and needs to be included. The more exercise and outdoor time he can get, the better, even if it means just going for long walks. Because he loves tagging along he would certainly do well with someone who could take him to work or school or is otherwise home a good part of the day. At night you could expect him to try and burrow under the covers, but will sleep on his own bed if told.

Gotti is 5.5 years old, he weighs about 65 pounds, and he is neutered and current on his shots. If you are interested in meeting this amazing companion dog, please EMAIL Sheila at nedloh1@yahoo.com.
