My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

JOE is 2 year old black neutered male who weighs 68 pounds (needs to gain a few). He is very sweet and wants to give kisses to everyone. He met the resident cats, got a little too close, and received a hiss and bop on the nose, which has made him pretty much steer clear since. Though when the cats hide, he is very interested in finding them. We'll need another day or two to see if that interest abates. He's very interested every time a door or gate opens so caution is needed so he doesn’t sneak out. Joe is very friendly and loves to be with you . As you can see in his video he likes to retrieve and had a ball running around the yard at the kennel. Joe has that playful energy of a young Lab. He enjoyed playing with his different kennel mates at the Shelter. He has a happy temperament, sturdily built, active, - but sometimes jumps on people intermittently. Would do well with an active owner who likes to walk/jog. He knows sit, come down (sometimes). Will have a training addendum. He pulls some on lead better with an Easy Walk. He is Heartworm positive (Lab Rescue will pay for Heartworm treatment if done at one of our vets). He is approved for kids 10 and up.

Update from foster home (11/10): Tall, dark, and handsome, Joe's looks are killer. So much so, he loves staring at himself in the mirror and checking out his toned muscles, sleek fur, and striking eyes. He's a big boy who loves his people, and he loves following you around or snuggling with you on the couch. Joe loves to run around and have fun, but he settles quite nicely (nearby!) if you're busy with something else. He made a visit to the dog park and was awesome. All he wanted to do was to run around, say hi to all of the people, and sniff a few dogs. He's a great walker and is totally non-reactive to anything outside, though he absolutely needs an EZWalk harness. Joe is very food-motivated and very trainable. He is eager to please you and has picked up a few tricks already. He's been great with the foster's dog and likes to stay close to her. Dog-savvy cats are a must as he's very interested in saying hello. He's a fabulous boy waiting for his forever family!

Update from foster home (10/1): Joe is doing wonderfully in his foster home. He's perfect in his crate both when we have to leave him during the day, and through the night. He wants nothing more than to be wherever the humans are, and follows us like a little bouncy shadow. He's begun taking every single plush toy from the toy box and tossing them around the house. Even when he settles down with one though, he doesn't tear it up, just nuzzles it and lightly mouths it. He loves his nylabone, and will chew on that throughout the day. He sits for treats (and takes them very gently), his food, and to come inside. He has stopped jumping up almost entirely; he's a very quick learner. We will start clicker training this week, to work on 'down', 'paw,' and reinforcing 'sit', 'come', and 'go to bed'. Joe is still not doing much retrieving or playing with tennis balls, but loves to chase and rough and tumble play with the resident lab. He's got plenty of puppy energy, and will need an active home with lots of opportunities for exercise. He is also doing great with the cats, but he will give some chase if they run. Dog savvy cats will be best.

Update from foster home (9/29): Joe rode really well in the car just laying down calmly in the back seat. He spent the first 15 minutes exploring the yard, he LOVES to sniff. He enjoyed meeting the resident lab, they chased each other for a few minutes. He has an adorable bouncy stride when he runs, he's all paws and legs. He is very food motivated and has no significant interest in toys yet (unless there is food in it), but did chase a ball a few times.
