Story
Meet Dixie Dixie is a gorgeous two-year-old black and tan coonhound. She was at risk of euthanasia at a kill- shelter until we brought her to the safety of our no-kill shelter. She is a gem! Dixie is incredibly beautiful. She has a glossy black and tan coat, endless legs, adorable ears, and bright, intelligent, sparkling eyes. Dixie has a delightful personality. She is a happy, affectionate, sweet, friendly, and adorable girl. She is athletic and smart. Dixie is very agile and a good climber. She’s learning to walk on a leash. Dixie will thrive with an active person or family. She likes other dogs and may benefit from a companion. Dixie most likely found herself at a kill shelter because she wouldn’t hunt. Hard to know for sure, but we often see coonhounds like Dixie at shelters because they don’t want to do what they’ve been bought to do. Having met Dixie, we think she just wants to be a family companion where her only job is to love her people and bring happiness and joy to their world. Dixie has been quiet since arriving and doesn’t seem to be a talker. If you’re looking for an incredible young dog to be your friend, companion, hiking and/or running buddy, lunch lady and travel girl, Dixie may be just what you’re looking for. If interested in Dixie, please submit an application online at: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application Once an application is submitted online, you will receive an email saying your application has been successfully received. If you don’t receive this email within 24 hours, please check to make sure all application fields were completed or please email us at smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with a current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://smithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also rescued from local and area Animal Controls. The facility usually operates at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open. Adoptions and meet and greets are scheduled by appointment only. Complete an application and someone will be in touch just as soon as they can. An application doesn’t commit you or us to an adoption, but it allows our coordinator to begin the review process. Introducing Sweet Simone! This approximately 10 month old girl is oh so sweet and affectionate.  Simone is a happy, playful girl and like her sister Nadia has the cutest wigglebutt you have ever seen!  Simone and her sister Nadia were born to a stray Mom and were found living in an abandoned dilapidated house. They came to us scared and shy but have come a long way. Simone is still shy and cautious with strangers so she will need a little extra patience in the beginning. She is overall a well adjusted, delightful girl with a perfect temperament. She has a beautiful feminine face and athletic build. She weighs a healthy 50lbs.  She is a stunning girl!   Simone is up to date on all vaccines. Spayed,  heartworm negative and microchipped. Crate trained, we are working on leash training.  This precious girl is lovingly fostered in Rutledge GA.    ##1172345##

Story
Deputy was born to a stray Mom in a dilapidated abandoned shack.  Completely feral and terrified of humans the Mom could not and would not be caught. It was a freezing cold rainy January day when I first saw her litter of 14 huddled together in the corner of the abandoned house with no windows or doors. Too young to take, all we could do was leave food for the Mom each day hoping she would not leave or move her puppies. But she did move them numerous times. Sadly we continued to find dead puppies until one day they all disappeared. At age 4.5 months we were notified that 5 puppies were eating at the abandoned house. We recognized them by their markings and age. These pups were also feral by this time. But we could not leave them to live their lives as strays in a rural county with no animal control or shelter. Where they would likely be shot, poisoned or trapped to be used as bait dog's.  Three of Deputy's siblings have been adopted and are absolutely wonderful pets. Deputy and his brother Roscoe are still being fostered. Deputy was always the most cautious boy of his litter. He is extremely smart and curious, wants to play and be included, but often at a distance. It's been a slow process to gain his trust. Deputy bears a striking resemblance to Paw Patrols "Chase." He has coonhound markings including the distinctive "pumpkin seeds" above his big sweet brown eyes. With a long basset hound shaped body, short legs, and adorable east/west facing chubby front paws.  Deputy is one of a kind and so stinking cute. Deputy is good with other dogs of all ages & sizes and has been introduced to cats but at a distance. He's a healthy stocky boy with a lush shiny coat. He has the most expressive eyes. That tell me he wants to come closer but just needs to learn more trust and confidence.  Deputy will require a very patient adopter or foster home that is experienced with fearful dogs. His foster home currently has a lot of dogs, including a medical foster. They are managing so many personalities and dynamics they cannot give him the one on one attention he desperately needs. He absolutely needs a fenced yard. Dirt Road Doggie’s Rescue will provide everything he needs and our full support as he transitions to new surroundings. He is a terrific watch dog. Keenly aware and protective. He will be challenging. But like his siblings, once the barrier is lifted you will have an amazing little guy to love. Deputy needs a hero. ♥  Deputy is being lovingly fostered in Rutledge Ga.  ##816349##

Story
Missy can be described in one word "Sweetness. She loves life. She's very active and will help you get your 10k steps! She loves people and she enjoys playing with other male dogs. A meet and greet would be best if you have a dog. Would be great for agility training. Loves to run and jump. Missy is a really good dog who found herself homeless through no fault of her own like most dogs in shelters. She deserves to find a home that will spoil her. She especially likes to play with Brutus (also for adoption), they LOVE each other. She will need time to decompress from being at the shelter so long. She is active but knows how to calm down and cuddle. If you are having a bad day, she will cheer you up. When we move her from kennel to outside space and back, she insists on getting her hugs before she is moved. She wants all the attention. Professional Hugger! Missy can be fearful of new folks, so if considering Missy, you'll need to make multiple visits to the shelter for her to get to know you. Consider it like dating. First you visit, then perhaps some dog walking to see if you are a good fit. As well, we suggest a one person home as she wants ONLY her person. Care should be taken to introduce new folks to her slowly and methodically. Once she loves you, she REALLY loves you. Come meet her and let her put a smile on your face. She's a special one. Fenced yard recommended.
