Rhett was released to us with some other Cavaliers when a breeder was downsizing. All he has ever known is breeding, that is the only time he was touched or held. We have reason to believe he was even moved from breeder to breeder, being traded. With some of his breeders, he never got to go outside, never saw sun or grass, never was cuddled. If you aren’t familiar with this breed, please do some research. His wellness exam was “unremarkable”, meaning the doctor found him to be healthy! He has been so excited & happy with the new comforts he has found. He is an excellent car rider & loves to relax on the couch with his foster siblings. He would do great with a family who likes to be outside. Rhett has learned the freedom of having a big backyard where he can explore. He loves to run the perimeter of the yard & assign himself security duties, lol. Rhett loves the outdoors & would be a great walking/hiking partner once he learns to leash walk. He has been wearing a harness & his foster mom has had a leash attached. But he is not ready for leash walking outside a secure area just yet. He certainly will not do his potty business on a leash. We will be requiring a VERY secure physically fenced yard/area for potty training, as that is something he will need to do immediately upon arriving at his new home. Rhett is doing well with house training. He doesn't signal to go outside, but he does go to the door & knows that is the direction to go! Rhett certainly enjoys the treat he gets for being a good boy when he potties outside. His family will need to establish a schedule so he can continue to be successful. Rhett’s foster family has Cavalier experience & he has foster Cavalier siblings, so they have really been working on what it is like to live in a house with normal everyday noises & activities. Rhett is not ready to be a “pet” yet. He needs time to continue decompressing, time to build trust, time to establish relationships. Until then, Rhett’s family will need to be prepared to be very patient. He will let you pick him up, but he would prefer to just sit next to you. He enjoys being people & especially other dogs. He needs a chance to just exist in his environment until he sees that this good life is forever. At night he sleeps with his foster siblings, they typically all snuggle together on the couch. When his foster family is gone, he will crate with his foster siblings & have soothing music or the television on. They are also good to leave in a puppy proofed room of the house. Please apply quickly if you meet the requirements. Rhett would like to start getting to know his family & explore his backyard as soon as possible!

Maizie Cavalier King Charles Spaniel DOB 04/05/17 16lbs Spayed / Microchipped UTD on vaccinations & Heartworm Preventative Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY. If you meet the requirements, please send an email to gateway4paws@gmail.com for additional information. Applications, as well as FAQ regarding adoption, can be found on our website. Since we are 100% foster-based rescue, only approved applications will be reviewed and/or contacted. We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive there for a meet & greet. Maizie came from a past life of breeding. Thankfully, she is a love bug and is not timid like most are. At Maizie's vet intake appointment, the vet heard a heart. Because of this, we got her seen with the cardiology team at U of I. She was diagnosed with Myxomatous Mitral Valve Degeneration (MMVD) aka Leaky valve, which is common for the cavalier breed. With this condition, Maizie should be evaluated regularly for progression in heart disease by a cardiologist yearly for an echocardiogram and blood pressure and will eventually be put on medication. Your local vet is not the same as a cardiologist and they can not perform these tests so ensure you have or can drive to your nearest cardiologist before applying. Maizie is not very good on a leash yet. She might be receptive to it at a later date, once her family has developed a relationship with her. Knowing that she won't leash walk right now, we must insist on a physically secure fence for her, as she will need to immediately continue her outside potty routine. The only way to be successful with this is to have a secure contained area. Maizie is doing very good with her potty-training routine. Her foster mom has been very proud of her progress & says she is almost there! It is important to note that anytime there is a change in environment or schedule, you must give the dog a chance to be successful. A new routine that employs consistency & praise will help set them up for success. Maizie is a loyal friend. She quickly took up with her foster mom & is comfortable being around her during normal household activities. She is doing well with quiet well-behaved children, adults, men, women, & all her foster canine siblings. She is very much enjoying making friends. Please let us know if you have the perfect home to offer Maizie by sending us an email. Gateway4paws@gmail.com
