Story
Levi is a 2 year old Pitbull/Lab mix. He is a really playful boy, so he would do best in a home that loves adventure! Levi has some resource guarding that he is working on here and will need continued training when he is adopted. His adopter should be experienced with this breed and resource guarding. He is an amazing dog ,but he requires real structure. Levi just finished his first group training class at Dog Gone Smart and did terrifically! Levi has been at PAWS way too long! His ideal family would be a couple or single person with no children in the home where Levi can decompress without being too overwhelmed. He loves to go on hikes and play ball and would make a wonderful active companion. He loves his bestie Rue, and would be fine playing with other dogs after a proper introduction. He would do best as the only dog in the home, however, Levi is microchipped, up to date on his vaccinations and neutered. His adoption fee is discounted.

Story
Fifi (along with sister Zoe) is looking for a new home after the passing of her mom. One of the granddaughters took Fifi and Zoe to the kennel because the other granddaughter was going to leave the girls loose in the unfenced yard. She felt like it was no life for them and they could wander off or be attacked. She never thought it would be over six months that the poor girls would be in the kennel with no one to love or care about them as treasured companions. Our hearts just ache for these girls who are so sweet and are so deserving for being the center of someone's world. Our lead volunteer in AL, Lisa, shares, "Fifi is so sweet! She would be great with an older couple or most anyone. Fifi is not high energy even though she is only 2-3 years old. Everyone at the kennel (and me) thinks Fifi is the sweetest thing in the world! She would make someone a great dog as long as they only wanted one dog. She is so easy - you give them a treat and they will do anything you want, but they mainly just want to lay around and be rubbed down and Loved. Fifi is 2-3 years old, is spayed, and up to date on vaccinations. Fifi was treated for heartworm and is now cleared for regular activity. She weighs about 39 lbs and is such a nice sized-dog for folks who live in an apartment or condo. Fifi loves to eat and she loves treats which she will take very gently from your hand. Fifi walks pretty decently on a leash and is house-trained. When she gets to know you, she is very loving. Fifi is dog-selective so it is probably best if she is placed as an only dog, or she could be adopted with her sister, Zoe. She's not super active for her age so she's a good fit for somebody a little older or someone who wants a snuggly companion Lisa, our lead volunteer in AL, has taken Fifi under her wing and can tell you all you need to know about this sweetie pie. Please contact Lisa at lkh5@mchsi.com or call/text 251-404-0045 to learn more about Fifi. Travel arrangements to the northeast can be arranged. Please consider this lovely lady to fill your life with happiness with her warm smile and unconditional affection. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. Story
Update 4/12/24: As you can see, Matt has improved significantly since first coming to our rescue. He has gained much-needed weight and is feeling frisky! With the fur that has grown back in, he is certainly looking like a Chocolate Lab puppy, and he would love a family to call his own. Matt is now in a loving foster home in VT and ready to be adopted! His foster mom shared some wonderful updates about this little darling. "The little trooper is settling in nicely and is doing very well. He sleeps with the pack, meaning in my bed, and lets me sleep until 8:30. He is a very good boy, is very intelligent, and learns fast. He walks pretty well on the leash and has learned to sit. He is already jumping on me less, is careful around Sonam, and respects Kali (his canine sisters). Matt does his business outside before eating and then again after eating. He is so curious and has found his voice. He loves chasing kongs, but like any young puppy, he gets tired easily and enjoys his naps. He has a favorite bed and also likes snuggling with one of the other dogs or his humans. Oh, and he loves laying out in the sun!" If your specialty is TLC and you are approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Donna to be considered to adopt this sweet, wonderful boy. If not yet approved, please fill out an application to be considered. Matt is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm negative, and received a Proheart 6 injection for heartworm prevention so he will not need any additional HW preventatives for 6 months. Be sure to watch Matt's video! Update 4/2/24: As you can see, Matt has made significant improvements since first coming to our rescue. He has gained much-needed weight and is feeling frisky! With the fur that has grown back in, he is certainly looking like a Chocolate Lab puppy who would love a family of his own. He will be heading north on 4/6/24 to a loving foster home in VT. He is ready to be adopted so do not hesitate to ask about Matt. We are so thankful to our volunteers, vet staff, and donors who all have been a part of Matt's care. 3/20/24 Update: Matt came into our rescue at 28 lbs and has since gained about 3 lbs. The vets feel a good weight for this sweetie pie would be in the 50 lb range. In the pictures we have at the end of the third week, you can see little bits of peach-fuzz fur growing back in!! One of our volunteers shared this lovely update on our boy: "He’s made progress for sure! I can tell you Matt is absolutely adorable, friendly, and bounces in place when he’s excited to see you. He wags his tail often and loves being petted. Matt knows how to sit which is good since he’s so young. He has gained a little weight, although I’m not sure if he’s going to grow into those paws or not! :-) His fur is kind of reddish - maybe he’s all Golden but we're not sure yet - as more fur comes in, we'll be able to tell. Matt ’s very very sweet and seems to like other dogs and loves people!" Matt's Story: “Scram!” “Scat!” “Go away, you mangy mutt!” Oh, our hearts ache when we think of how unkind people may have been to sweet Matt in his time of dire need. In early March, Lisa, our lead volunteer in AL, received a plea from the Mobile County shelter asking for help with a puppy who had been roaming at large. This gentle dog was in horrific shape and in desperate need of veterinary care. He was severely underweight at 28 lbs and was suffering from a dreadful skin condition. This sweet baby had to be in such terrible pain from such tender skin – yet, his tail wagged happily as we took him into our rescue and named him Matt. Matt needs to stay in the animal hospital for several weeks where he has undergone medical evaluation. It was determined that Matt is severely underweight and is suffering from demodex mange, a parasitic skin disease caused by microscopic mites. When Matt first arrived, he could hardly walk because his feet hurt so badly. We had to wrap him blankets for the first week just to pick him up because he would whimper in pain. He was so malnourished and was very weak. Yet Matt craved human affection and would crawl up onto the laps of his favorite humans at the clinic. He amazed everyone with his friendly demeanor and a wagging tail! Because Matt was so emaciated, his body hardly had the ability to combat this condition. Matt has since been given high-quality nutrition, medications to eradicate the mites, and medicated baths. Matt has started to turn the corner and his skin has begun to improve. Soon his fur will start growing back in! The vet staff caring for Matt shared, "In the time Matt has been with us, he has become more comfortable and in less pain. His inner happiness is coming out and he has bursts of energy where he wants to run, jump, and play! In the areas where Matt has fur, it is about 2-3 inches long and is a stunning reddish color with a white blaze on his chest. He has liver-colored lips and hazel eyes. We know he will be quite the looker when he is healed! This is a very sensitive and sweet soul." If Matt had not been rescued, it is doubtful he would have survived. But treating demodex mange is a long and costly process. Boarding at the vet’s office for over a month and frequent medicated baths are only part of the cost. Skin scrapings should be performed regularly until two negative skin scrapings are obtained, a few weeks apart. Then, treatment should continue for several weeks after the second negative skin scraping. Add into the mix that Matt needed to be neutered and had to be brought up-to-date on vaccinations. $$$ Cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching! $$$ As you can see, Matt still has a way to go and we will continue to post updates and let you know when sweet little Matt will be ready for adoption. If you would like to help sponsor Matt, you can donate via this link or send a check to SGRR, PO Box 247, Port Washington, New York 11050. Story
Update 4/9/2024: Hanky is in a wonderful foster home in CT now and we found out what a charmer he is! His foster mom shares, "He's doing fine, as expected. Some He's eating well, peeing and pooping well outside. He is easy to walk, good on a leash, and just sweet and fun! Apparently, he has never seen himself in a mirror so that has been a new experience. We have a mirror in our hallway, and he will walk down the hall and just stare at himself. Then he walks away but turns around just enough to peek at himself. Too cute! He adores my husband and they have become good buddies!" Hanky's Story: As Charles M. Schulz would say, “Happiness is a warm puppy.” And if you are looking for a warm puppy, look no further because you have found Hanky who will warm your heart and soul! Our rescue was notified by the Elmore County Shelter in AL that a young guy showed up with Hanky and his sister, Mia Lucia, in a wooden trailer. They told him they were absolutely packed but he did not care and simply left the two pups behind. As it turns out, they are really nice dogs and SGRR will be happy to find them a home! Hanky weighs about 75 lbs and appears to be a Lab mix. His coat is very plush and soft in beautiful shades of cream and white. He is about 8-9 months old so so he's going to be a large dog when fully grown. Like so many big dogs, Hanky is a sweet love muffin who thinks he's a lap dog. He loves to have his belly scratched and does this thing where he looks like he is melting slowly into the ground as he lowers himself, bit by bit, for a belly rub. Hanky loves you to throw toys and balls for him; he'll go get them but he won't bring them back - one of those "Labrador Keepers!" Hanky is pretty good on a leash and he's good with other dogs. Hanky keeps his kennel clean which is a good sign he is house-broken. He is not a chewer and does not chew up his bedding, blankets, or stuffed toys. Both Hanky and sister Mia are trained on invisible fencing and crate-trained as well. Hanky looks for Mia at the kennel and will kiss her through the fencing. Hanky and Mia Lucia can be adopted together or individually. Hanky is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, micro-chipped, and heartworm negative. He had a Proheart 6 injection for heartworm prevention and will not need any additional HW preventatives for 6 months. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to take on whatever comes with the dog. It is up to YOU to continue the rehabilitation we have begun. This is what it means to rescue. If you would like to be part of Hanky's rescue story and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt Hanky. If not yet approved for adoption, please visit our website to lean more and to submit an online application. Click here to visit our website. Please contact us with any questions regarding your application status. PLEASE APPLY by submitting an application via this online link: Click for Adoption Application About Our Rescue Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready. The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home. SGRR ADOPTION FEES - Effective May 1, 2020 (subject to change) $750 Puppy - up to 6 months $650 Young 6 months - 6 years $550 Senior 7 - 9 years $450 Senior 10 years and older $550 Young Special Needs $400 Senior 7+ Special Needs $1000 Young Bonded Pair $900 Senior 7+ Bonded Pair A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided. Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed. Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog. Story
Hi my name is Curly and I have a great story to tell. I am a good boy that’s shy and unsure at first. People, car rides, and loud noises scare me. So I need a home that is quiet and 1-2 people at most would be best. I do great with other dogs, they bring me out of my shell. I know I’m not for everyone but I am the right one for the special person, who can work with me and go at my slow pace, who won’t get frustrated that the world is sometimes scary to me and I need time and help figuring it out. I really want to be loved and give you love, it will just take time, trust, and understanding. I am kennel trained, house trained, and like the backyard. Leash walks are not my favorite but I am working on that. Since I am scared, I like to be able to go in and out of my kennel when I am scared or just feel like it. If you want a special dog that’s not like everyone else, but will always hold a special place in your heart…. I am your boy! I have been around dogs and cats with no issues. I've also been around kids, but I prefer to keep to myself when little ones are around. I'm also crate and housetrained, neutered, heartworm negative, and have age-appropriate vaccinations!  If you're interested in adopting, please email your phone number to rockcityrescue@gmail.comApril 4, 2024, 12:04 am

Story
Hi, my name is Moe! If you are looking for a special dog, you are barking up the right tree! What makes me special is that life started out a little shaky for me and has left me more nervous and scared than the average dog. With time, understanding, patience, and building trust I will open up and be the best companion you could want! As the saying goes, I stick to the 3’s. I need 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks of a consistent routine and time to learn it & 3 months to start feeling at home. At first, I am more comfortable with other dogs and people really scare me, so I would do best with an outgoing friendly dog in the house to show me how to feel comfortable and confident. As time goes on, I get more used to humans but would do best in a single-person home or just a couple (too many people or a lot of children will be too much for me). I like my kennel and my safe dark space. I will come around and hang out more when I trust it is safe. I am kennel trained and working on being better with the leash. If you are looking for an amazing but special dog who needs a little bit of a calmer lifestyle, I am your man!!!! Email your phone number to rockcityrescue@gmail.com for more info!
