Story
Meet Daisy (her official name is Chamomile, but she answers to Daisy)!    Daisy is a Shih Tzu. She is 10 years old and weighs 17 lbs. She was adopted from Needy Paws 3 years ago, which is why the name on her record is Chamomile, but her adopter had to return her after experiencing health issues.    Daisy is the sweetest little dog. She has a shy nature but enjoys being petted and scratched behind her ears. She lived with another small dog and cats in her former home so she would get along well with those in her new home. She would do best in a relatively quiet home and would be fine with older children.    Daisy is house-trained and does great in a kennel or puppy pen when her foster mom has to leave the house. She sleeps in bed with her foster at night and enjoys her dog bed in the living room. She walks pretty well on a leash (she likes to stop and sniff quite a bit) and enjoys exploring the yard.    Daisy does not appear to be comfortable walking on stairs at this time and she will not jump on or off furniture on her own, so  her adopter will need to be able to physically lift her (17 lbs)  if she needs to do stairs or go into the car. She doesn't like to be picked up, so she will sometimes squirm when she is being lifted or put down and she needs to be handled carefully so she doesn't fall. She has never growled or nipped when being picked up, and she may get better about this issue with time, but we wanted to include it in her profile because she would not be the best fit for an adopter with mobility issues.   Daisy is accustomed to living in a home with her family, so we would love to get her placed in her forever home soon. If that might be you, apply to meet her today!     If you are interested, complete the  Adoption Application  on our website at  www.NeedyPaws.org  and we will contact you.  Adopters must live within an hour’s drive of St. Louis, MO. Chamomile’s adoption fee is $275.00, which includes up-to-date vaccinations, heartworm testing and preventative, spay/neuter and microchip. We are a 100% foster-based rescue and all of our dogs live in approved foster homes. We are dedicated to finding the best Forever Homes, and will perform home visits and conduct veterinarian and reference checks for each potential adopter. Applications can be found on our website at gateway4paws.org Betsy was released to rescue because she wasn’t producing good litters for her breeder. She is really coming along since being in her foster home. She prefers her foster mom but still adjusting to accept her foster dad. She enjoys laying around and chewing on her bones or snuggling with her other foster brother, Hershey who is also available for adoption. She will do best learning from other 4 legged siblings so we would like to see her find a home with some siblings of similar size & energy level. Betsy has not had any accidents in her foster home for weeks but an new home needs to understand she could have accidents until she gets a new routine down. She is still not accepting of the harness and leash yet. We know she will get there but it is just not in the cards for her yet. Therefore for her safety, a secure physical fenced yard is a must. If you are looking for a quiet friend that will listen to you talk, with no judgement & no disagreement, Betsy is exactly what you are looking for! Betsy is an absolute doll, and she will make a fabulous roommate. We hope to find her a human friend that is interested in spending the day with Betsy watching & observing the world. Betsy isn’t a lap dog (yet) or an ‘adventure’ dog. She is a dog that is finally getting her chance to lounge around & be a dog!

Stitch/ Shih Tzu 2yo/ 13lbs Neutered/Microchipped UTD on vaccinations Current on flea/ tick/ heartworm prevention Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY, it will answer most of your questions. Applications can be found on our website at gateway4paws.org Stitch is settling in a home for the first time in his horrible, short, little life. We know people will ask, so, yes, Stitch was a breeder release. We won’t dwell on how awful that experience was, or how that breeder is allowed to continue to operate. We are just extremely thankful that he was allowed to come to us & has a chance to be happy & free. We will be looking for a home that is prepared to give him time & space to get comfortable. His foster mom sent this update to us: “Today marks one month he has been with us. He continues to learn how to be a dog. It's apparent that Stitch had very little human interaction before coming to us and what interaction he had does not seem to be good. He came to us extremely fearful of humans. If we came near him he would run, hide and poop, refusing to be touched by a human. If you could catch him to pick him up, he seized up & turned into stone. However, we work with him every single day and I'm glad to report he is showing progress (especially the last few days). We are now approaching him slowly. He retreats to a corner and lets us give him a few pets; we then gently pick him up from the corner. He loves his brothers & sisters. If they are around, he doesn't have a worry in the world. The first 3 weeks he was glued to the hip of our male dog Oscar (which we found interesting). This past week he's been playing with the girls quite a bit. You can run a vacuum cleaner right next to him, open & load the dishwasher, do laundry, sweep the broom right over his feet, and he doesn't care. He sleeps with us & is great in the big bed! He has a hearty appetite, loves treats, plays with toys from time to time, and has learned to use steps. We do use a belly band (he marks) but anytime he goes outside he does go to the bathroom. We tried walking him once, but he is not ready yet. I think in time that will come.” Stitch is a sweet boy that is just waiting to come out of his shell. We’ve seen it when he plays with the other dogs. So, to sum it up, here are the highlights. He will need a secure physically fenced yard, as he will need to immediately have a safe place to go potty. In time, his family can work on leash training, but it isn’t going to happen any time soon. He is a very good boy that doesn’t need to be crated & is always on his best behavior when his foster family is gone. They leave him in a pet-proofed area of the home until they return. Stitch needs a low-key family that will allow him to bloom. If his family has another furry friend of similar size, it would be a plus, but is not mandatory. He enjoys being able to be in the same room as his family at night, and really likes to sleep in the big bed. Napping on the couch is part of a normal routine day for him. Please apply if you have a nice slow-paced home for Stitch to join.

Well, he arrived at his foster home & was greeted by some furry friends who assured him it was going to be fabulous from here on out. He spent the first few weeks just watching. Watching the humans, watching the other dogs, & watching the household activities. Hershey has come a long way and now follows his foster mom everywhere. He will jump up on the recliner so his foster mom will hold him. He is still unsure of his foster dad but is getting better. In his new home, everyone will need to understand Hershey will need time to adjust so you will need patience. Hershey is still not accepting of the harness and leash so he will need a secure physically fenced yard. In time, his family can work on leash training, but it isn’t going to happen any time soon. He is a very good boy that doesn’t need to be crated & is always on his best behavior when his foster family is gone. He is not completely potty trained but taken out often, he doesn't have accidents. Hershey needs a low-key family that will allow him to bloom. He really needs another dog of similar size in the home already. He enjoys being able to be in the same room as his family at night, with his four-legged friends. Please apply if you have a nice slow-paced home for Hershey to join.

Sydney/ Shih Tzu 4yo *DOB 07/18/19 Approx 12lbs Spayed/Microchipped UTD on vaccinations Current on flea & heartworm prevention Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY. If you feel your family is a perfect match, please send an email to gateway4paws@gmail.com for additional information. Only complete & qualified applications will be considered/contacted. We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive to that area for a meet and greet. We are a 100% foster-based rescue. Applications and FAQ regarding adoption can be found on our website. Sydney, a chocolate Shih Tzu, was released to rescue because her breeder is retiring. All the dogs at her facility are slowly being released to rescue. Once they are in a foster home, we are giving them a chance to decompress & adjust to their surroundings. We get to know them as best we can in a short window of time, get them vetted, try to identify any health concerns, and get them ready for adoption into their forever families! Sydney's foster mom has this to say about her: "Sydney is the sweetest & loves everyone. She loves attention, loves to play, and prefers humans to be with her. She gets along with her fur brothers & sisters. She would benefit from having a canine sibling who would be a companion & would be willing to share their toys. She absolutely loves to run the fenced back yard! She goes outside & inside easily. She does not tell you when she needs to go outside, so her family needs to be prepared to instigate going outside. She will use a potty pad." So, as mentioned Sydney is loving her new freedom of running all around her very own secure yard, she is not leash trained & will not do her potty duties on leash. For these reasons, we will insist that her adopting family have a secure physically fenced yard for her to run around in, as well as continue her potty training. Sydney is a happy, easy-going little gal that would love to have a home where her humans would hang out with her & include her in their leisure activities. We hope to find her a human friend that is interested in spending the day with Sydney watching & observing the world. She is a dog that is finally getting her chance to lounge around & be a dog!
