Story
1 year old Athena's journey reflects the epitome of resilience and hope in the face of adversity. This courageous and exquisite dog found herself in a daunting situation when she was surrendered to a small high-kill shelter in Texas, with only her name as a possession. The owners couldn't keep her due to landlord issues. Despite the challenges, Athena's spirit remained unbroken, radiating courage and affection, eagerly seeking a fresh start filled with joy and love.
With her soulful green eyes, softest ears, shiny blue coat, and gentle demeanor, Athena has stolen the hearts of everyone she meets. She has dewclaws on her back paws, which is a common Great Pyrenees trait, but she appears mostly Weimaraner. She's a loyal companion who longs for nothing more than a warm bed to call her own and a family to cherish her forever. Athena is ready to fill your life with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
She has undergone house training and is currently learning to use potty bells on the door for additional bathroom breaks. Crate trained, she thrives best in a plastic crate as when she wants out/to be with you, she paws at the liner and pulls at the crate. Athena is non-destructive and has not chewed on anything other than toys, but she is also crated when unsupervised. She adores toys, especially bones and tug of war.
Her barking is reserved for delivery drivers or strangers in the driveway. Athena sleeps peacefully in her crate with her blanket and bone, and enjoys the company of other pets, including dogs and an older social cat in her foster home. She does have a prey drive, so if you have cats, they should have previous experience with dogs as she can accidentally harm them with her size and play style (she's had no issues with the foster cat).
Athena's fondness for human companionship is evident in her interactions with her foster family's children. She is affectionate, playful, and responds well to corrections like "no" and "sit" when jumping out of excitement. She wants to be with them no matter if that's lounging on the couch or while the kids are playing with their toys. After chasing her foster humans and playing with the foster dogs, she's ready to snuggle up, get some belly rubs, and chew on a toy. As long as she has ample time to run and play with her family, children, and dogs, she will be content.
Commands she knows include sit, no, and go potty, with ongoing training in Down, Here, Shake, and freely walking in the kennel. Athena prefers to eat in her crate without sharing and requires a fenced, secure yard due to her past inclination to explore when left outside unsupervised in her former home. While she may pull on walks due to her keen sense of smell, she behaves exceptionally well during vet appointments and car rides.
Her ideal home would have someone present more often than not, with boundaries respected by children and continued training for her jumping behavior. She would love to have kids to grow up with and another dog to play with in her future home! Athena's charm, gentleness, and desire for companionship make her an ideal addition to a loving family willing to provide her with the care and attention she deserves.
