Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Important:   We're a small (but mighty!) volunteer-run organization. To be considered for one of our adoptable animals, you must first submit an   application   at stfrancisanimal.org. Due to the high volume of applications we receive, a volunteer will contact you within 72 hours only if it's a possible match. Stormi was found alone, shivering in the rain under a bush in San Jose at 6 months old in December 2022. She was adopted in January 2023, becoming part of a happy family with a young couple and their large dog. The dogs did well most of the time and loved to play. However, the family’s other dog wasn’t always keen on Stormi, with the resident dog initiating fights. While her family loves her dearly, they made the difficult decision to rehome her for her mental and physical well-being. Stormi is 1.5 years old, about 50 pounds, and still has puppy energy, but is a sweet cuddle bug as well. She loves to play with toys, especially playing tug, but will also happily gnaw on a chew toy. She loves to de-stuffy soft toys (gotta get that squeaker!). She adores adventures and will run her little heart out at the park. She’s a big fan of chasing anything you throw, but she can’t promise she’ll bring them back. (Bonus: That means you get your steps in too!) If given the opportunity, Stormi would likely love and excel at agility courses—she’s smart as a whip and learns quickly. Stormi is a lover and snuggler who always wants to be with you, freely giving kisses at every opportunity. She loves to be on the couch with her humans but will also chill in her doggy bed for naps. Stormi’s mom took her to work several times a week. Stormi loved getting to say hi to all her coworkers. Stormi was so happy to be in the office that she sometimes gave folks sneaky elbow licks or demanded pets and love. She would love to have a backyard, but has made do with a small outdoor courtyard. She will do best if she has free access to an outdoor space to go potty. She can hold it for several hours but has a small bladder and needs to go out frequently. Stormi loves people and warms up quickly, but given her rough start in life, Stormi prefers greeting new people on her terms. She does best when ignored and allowed to sniff, choosing for herself when she wants pets or attention. (We get you, Stormi—personal space is personal space!) Once she’s decided to be friends, Stormi is friends forever. Stormi is crate trained and very food motivated. She’ll do just about anything for a treat. She has some training and can sit, lay down, get in to heel position, load up (into the car), get off, back it up, get out (of a room); she is working on wait, stay, come, on your bed, and heel. Stormi still pulls on leash and needs someone who can work with her on leash manners as well as other skills. Storni loves people and other dogs, and despite the scraps with her dog brother, has been fostered in a home with many resident dogs and numerous doggy visitors as her fosterer runs doggy day care and boarding out of his home. Stormi has been great with all the other dogs and has had no incidents while in foster. She has been great with the resident cat at foster in the house, but when outside is prone to chase cats. Stormi has met older kids and does fine, and for the first 2-3 weeks after being rescued lived in a home with teenagers, but otherwise has not lived with kids. She would likely do fine in a house with older kids. Stormi is healthy, spayed, and up to date on all her shots. She has several scars from the fights she got in with her dog brother. Stormi gets very anxious at the vet, so she takes anti-anxiety medication several hours before a vet visit and wears a muzzle in the clinic. Stormi is an amazing, and beautiful, dog who is a lovebug through and through. She generally has two modes: high energy chaos monster and crashed out cuddle bug who just wants to lay near you. She wears her heart on her sleeve, or rather her face in the form of her heart shaped nose. Stormi is hoping you will take her home and let her love you and be loved furever.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 12, 2024, 12:09 am

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Cuddle Bug Alert!Amazing April is a gorgeous 74 pound 6 year-old pittie mix. According to her foster mom, April is an excellent cuddle-bug whose love language is giving kisses…lots and lots of slobbery kisses! And did we mention this smart girl has a thing for carrying a favorite toy in her mouth on walks? How adorable is that? At home, April likes to be included in whatever’s going on. However, she will gladly retire to her crate for quiet time or when her people need to be out of the house. Her foster mom says April does fine if left at home in her crate for a few hours. Car rides are always a welcome treat for April and she's a great dog to bring along to visit friends or explore new places. She loves her walks and is enthusiastic about exploring her neighborhood.. April's been working on her reactivity towards dogs that bark at her and has made a lot of progress so far — she just needs some help redirecting her attention and keeping a safe distance.  Like many dogs of her breed, April has a sensitive stomach and skin so she'll need ongoing vet care to help manage that. A special non-prescription diet and regular allergy medication keeps April happy and healthy. April would do best being the only pet in a dog-savvy home where she can continue her training, get lots of opportunities for enrichment and play, and receive all the love she deserves. Prior to adoption, all dogs are spayed/neutered, tested for heartworm, vaccinated (including rabies, if age appropriate) and microchipped. On urgent needs rescue since 07-12-23.Inquired with 5 rescuesSummary of behavior07/31/23 14:34Decline in medical health, is slamming into the kennel and alarm barking. Needs rescue for 08/07. AVega7/12/23 08:09Reason needs rescue: Very active girl, needs rescue or foster. Has been in shelter since December. Not responding to medical management of kennel stress. Has been on gabapentin and trazadone with no improvement in mental condition/state. She is friendly but needs more exercise and mental stimulation that the shelter is unable to provide with our current case load. Otherwise healthy. SD09/07/23 08:31SVPP Dog Day Out Notes:Today I: Met a new friend and took a long hike! I saw bikes and people and squirrels! On the trail I loved sniffing all the great smells. I like to check in with my friends when we walk, just in case they have treats! I also got a yummy Pup Cup! On the way back to the shelter I got very excited and somehow got all tangled up, but my new friend helped me get unstuck and I did not mind at all when she had to fix my collar and harness in the car. Going back to the shelter is hard for me, I get anxious and very bouncy right away.Three Words to Describe Me are: Affectionate - Attentive - ExcitedNotes from My Walker: Maisey continues to do well on her outings and did a nice 4 mile hike today. She needs a few minutes to calm down when she first comes out of the kennel, and going back to the shelter is a bit of challenge, she gets excitable and jumpy the moment we return, but can be managed. Away from the shelter, Maisey is a lovely, happy girl! She walks beautifully on leash and demonstrates no reactivity to bikes or people. Today we did not encounter dogs. With her new DDO volunteer Maisey was immediately happy and excited to greet. She responds well to “sit” and is very treat motivated. She checks in regularly when walking and gives the sweetest kisses and nuzzles to solicit affection.08/31/23 15:30SVPP Dog Day Out Notes:Today I: Took a long walk in a park and in a big neighborhood. I also got to sit and watch people and dogs for awhile while I relaxed after my big hike!Three Words to Describe Me are: Cuddly - Attentive - ExcitedNotes from My Walker: Maisey improves each week on her DDO outings. This week it was just she and I and we had a very long, quiet walk. We encountered quite a few people and dogs, even a pair of running Huskies, and
