Story
Socialization/training: Ranger has had some basic obedience training as he understands sit down, stay, no, ect. Ranger has been known to be aggressive with certain dogs inside the house, but otherwise does well with other dogs. Ranger was tested with various types of dogs by a certified trainer, his issues with certain dogs are more situational. Ranger lived in an outdoor kennel, by himself, for over 10 years so he is still learning how to be a member of a family inside. Ranger likes things calm in the house. He is doing very well in his foster home with the other dogs in the home. He would prefer to be the only dog or share a home with another older dog that doesn’t get in his face. Crate trained: His past foster reported that he would settle down in the crate after 10 minutes or so. At his current foster home, he has made it clear he doesn’t want to be crated while his foster dad is away. He would constantly bark and keep moving around in the crate for hours and hours. Then he would be covered in drool and worn out. It was sad. He is/was fine with being crated if he knows his foster dad is home (ie overnight). After consulting with a trainer, Ranger stays in a large room by himself when his foster dad is gone. Most of the time Ranger will then lay down and rest until his foster dad comes home. He is watched randomly by a camera and if he is barking, a simple “Ranger sit down” and he will stop. Ranger’s life outside has made him more vocal than a lot of setters and that should be remembered in living circumstances where noise could be a problem. Leash trained:  Ranger is fine on the leash and loves to go for a walk. He is a very strong boy for his age and is very prey driven so he will pull and get distracted, but he is eager to please and learns fast. Activity Level: Ranger is very active for a dog of his age. He likes to run around the yard and even likes to play with certain dogs. He is always excited when his foster dad comes home and likes to run around and tell everyone how happy he is about it. Fence: Due to Ranger’s history of being kept in an outdoor kennel, he is a certified escape artist (with the bruises to prove it). A secure, physical privacy style fence of at least 6 feet will be required. He can climb chain link fences very easily. Behavior: Ranger is a sweet old man who would love nothing more than to lay in your recliner while you are home and nap. He is learning to enjoy being petted and loved on. He has been found to bond quickly and more favorably with men. He has no problem with women, but if there is a couple he will choose the male. He can be protective of his chosen people/person (resource guarding) when it comes to other dogs. His foster dad feeds him in his crate and has kept bone and toy time very supervised. Ranger likes things to be calm inside. He is still learning how to live inside with other dogs. He is doing really well but has more learning to do. Medical History: Ranger had lyme and was treated but he will test positive the rest of his life. Ranger has several old injuries from his escapes during his previous life. At some point it's believed he had a small stroke as he has one “lazy” eye. Ranger also has typical arthritis and old man pains and is on a daily pain reliever. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Foster Comments: Ranger is a very deserving dog. He is a sweet and happy old man. He loves a comfy chair, yummy meals, and to run around outside a little bit. Ranger is going on 11 years old, but he still has so much life left and love to give. He needs just the right retirement home that will be patient with him and help him live out his life happy and loved just as he deserves. Foster Location: Chesterton, IN Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions. ##1763593##

Story
Socialization/training: Mavroula is not treat motivated, at least not so far, making it more challenging to train her. She has learned her name, and most often comes when called. We are working on “come” and “sit”. A most endearing behavior is when she sees leashes come out, she sits perfectly still for you to put her leash and harness on her. We also practice “wait” when opening the gate to go on a walk. She has had no accidents since I have had her. She likes other dogs and most people. It took Mavroula some time to be friendly and relaxed with my dogs. She now lies sleeping near both my dogs and likes to be close to them. Crate trained: She is crate trained, but she doesn’t usually go into the crate. She also has a separate space in my house where she eats and goes when I leave the house. Leash trained: She walks well on a leash with or without other dogs. She doesn’t have a lot of practice walking on a leash, but she does not pull. She also runs well on a leash and is an almost perfect running companion. However, due to her inexperience she sometimes gets under your feet. Activity Level: Mavroula needs a few walks a day to be happy, but she does not need to run extensively as do many English Setters. Fence: A fenced yard is required for Marvoula. She needs at least a small backyard to run around in, and this yard needs to have a solid fence, at least 5 feet high. Behavior:  Mavroula came to me as a very anxious and fearful dog. She walked around with her tail tightly tucked between her rear legs. As she has become more confident and comfortable, her tail now comes out. She now walks around the house happily. Mavroula is a surprisingly easy dog. She is quiet, very gentle, and independent. She sometimes buries her sweet sensitive face shyly into me. We walk with other dogs and she likes being part of the group. She looks to people and other dogs she is familiar with for comfort and to gain confidence. Medical History: My vet says she is healthy. She is microchipped, spayed, fully vaccinated and on monthly heartworm prevention. Her next leishmaniasis test will be due in December 2024.  Mavroula originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250 or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Marvoula gets nervous and afraid when there is too much chaos and noise. She is nervous around young children, so kids in the home should be at least 12 years old or older. I feel very strongly that she needs a quiet home with at least one other dog that she can continue to learn from. I have fallen in love with Mavroula and will be very sad to let her go. Foster Location: Tucson, AZ Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Edith does not know any true commands, however she’s very quick to pick up on routines which is helpful with her being deaf. When meeting new people, including men and children, she is very sweet and does a tap dance. Edith will need to be the only pet in the home. She gets along with my senior lab most of the time but decides she doesn’t like her from time to time. I’ve never seen her around cats, but suspect her prey drive would kick in. She’s very trustworthy in the home, but will jump on furniture/windowsills with her front paws.    Crate trained: I’ve never had to put Edith in a crate. She can be trusted alone in the home for up to 9 hours. Leash trained: Edith enjoys short, 10 minute walks before she gets tired and lays down. While walking she likes to take her time and enjoy the smells. Activity Level: Edith has bursts of energy that last for a few minutes then she returns to sleeping. When outside, she’ll sniff around for a few minutes and ask to come back inside. She is fairly low energy and likes to find a quiet place to sleep.    Fence: I have a 6 foot fence, but a 4 foot fence would be fine. She is unable to jump fences and I haven’t seen her dig in the yard. If there is a hole big enough for her to escape, she will.    Behavior: Edith is a sweet, affectionate and loving little lady. She loves to be petted but isn’t much of a cuddler. She will lay for a few pets and will then find her own space. She’ll follow me around the house if she notices me moving. She likes to look out the window and will occasionally bark. She barks maybe once or twice a week. Medical History: Edith is completely deaf, but it doesn’t impact her day-to-day. She has arthritis in her hind hips and neck and because of the arthritis in her neck, she can’t hold her head up. She had a tumor removed from her right front paw in November 2023. The doctor was able to remove 95% of the tumor and expect it to grow back very slowly. It is not the type of cancer to spread. She takes medications easily with food with a monthly cost of approximately $75.      Foster Comments: Edith came to me in June 2023. Since she’s been with me, she’s really come out of her shell and it’s amazing what a little love has done for her personality. She is a sweet, mellow girl and will need a home with no other dogs. Foster Location: Liverpool, NY (Syracuse area) Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Chryssa is very sweet and loving. She loves all adults and children and is quick to lean into anyone willing to pet her. She plays well with dogs her size and smaller at the dog park. Chryssa rides well in the car as well as the golf cart where she is tethered in, of course. Chryssa is very food motivated, so training comes pretty easy for her.  She has been working on Sit, Stay and Off. She was a countertop surfer when she first arrived, but that has gotten better in our presence. Crate trained: Chryssa is great in her crate. At night she goes right into her crate where she sleeps through the night with the door open. If we leave during the day for a few hours she will go into her crate with a little help and lie down and await our return. Leash trained: Chryssa walks well with a harness with the typical prey drive when birds, rabbits or squirrels are in sight. Activity Level: Chryssa enjoys a walk or hike in the morning as well as one in the evening or running off leash in the dog park with her friends. She loves to play with her toys inside or in the yard, but requires super tough toys as she is quite a chewer. Fence: We have a 5' rod iron and block wall combo that she has never challenged. A fenced yard would be best for her so she can play and burn off energy during the day when not on walks or at the dog park. She is still quite young.  Behavior: Chryssa is affectionate, playful and a happy dog. She would love to sit in your lap or cuddle next to you on the couch. She is calm in the house and does not bark. She will check on you if you leave the room but then lays back down. She is a bit independent and a bit velcro, so a nice combo. Medical History: Chryssa is very healthy. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and on monthly heartworm and flea and tick prevention. Her next Leishmaniasis test is due November of 2024.      Chryssa originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. Foster Comments: Chryssa is a really wonderful dog. She is smart, sensitive and loving. She would be okay as an only dog but also would love the company of a fur sibling. Her ideal family would have a fenced yard for her to play in and also an active family to take her on lots of walks and hikes and incorporate her into their everyday lives and she loves to be with her humans. Foster Location: Florence, Arizona Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Requirements to Adopt: Any potential adopter must have at least one family member who either works from or stays at home for a majority of the week due to his separation anxiety. His larger size, coupled with his strength, also necessitates potential adopters to be capable of controlling his enthusiasm. He would do best as an only dog with no small children in the home. His adopter will need to be committed to continuing his training with a professional trainer. Socialization/training: While Beau has had a rough couple of years, he is polite and eager to please. He has welcomed every human and dog that we have had over to the house, although he does occasionally give big barks upon entry, but  settles quickly. We have monitored some growls that he has given other dogs over toys, furniture privileges, or affection, but nothing has escalated beyond that. He gets along with our setter and other dogs we’ve introduced him to, but he would likely prefer to be (and do best as) an only dog. We have not seen him bark at other dogs or people that we pass on walks, but he has sometimes barked when our “pack” separated or out of frustration while we worked on leash training. Beau is smart, eager to please, and knows his commands (e.g., sit, stay); however, he has the classic setter symptom of selective hearing, but he does listen in the times when we have really needed him to. He will sit before meals if instructed to and is released with “okay”. He would likely not be a good fit for a home with cats and small children. Beau has separation anxiety, and his adopter should be committed to working with him through these issues with a trainer after adoption. Crate trained: Beau has pretty severe separation anxiety and does not like to be in a crate. The ideal “forever” home for Beau will respect his history and not crate Beau. We gradually built access to the house for him and he has consistently demonstrated respect for boundaries. Beauford has been generally trustworthy without a crate. He has stolen some bread off the counter and knocked down one of the baby gates that was meant to keep him in one room. Otherwise, he has not destroyed anything in our home. Chewing is reserved for his toys, and he settles down after a while in a comfy spot. He is generally not a counter surfer, but I would not leave him home alone with food easily accessible. Leash trained:  He can be a challenge on walks, as he is overstimulated, which can come out as non-aggressive reactivity to dogs (pulling, jumping, and barking) and hyper-fixation on squirrels. With a trainer and positive reinforcement training, he will continue to grow. He does much better on a walk after just 10 minutes of fetch beforehand. Activity Level: Beau is a moderate- to high-activity dog. We do two 20-minute fetch sessions and two walks (20-30 minutes) per day and that seems sufficient for him. He really loves to play fetch and is just focused on fetching whatever you throw for him. He enjoys chewing bones, antlers, and stuffies while inside. He has done well with figuring out easy puzzle toys. Fence: A fence is not required but is preferred. He has not tried to challenge our fence. An invisible fence might heighten his anxiety, but I would consult a certified trainer and gauge your needs. Behavior:  What isn’t there to love about Beau’s personality?! Beau, despite all the challenges he has been through, is a beautiful boy that desperately wants love and stability and is so deserving of it. He will follow his people throughout the house, rest by their side, and respectfully ask for pets. He is full of personality, mouthing your hand to direct pets and leaning intensely into you for a hopeful cuddle. His zest for life (particularly fetch) has brought us so many smiles and laughs. He also respects when you are too busy to engage with him and will remove himself to find a bone or toy. Beauford’s only behavioral “weaknesses” likely stem from his trauma. His separation anxiety is moderate to severe. Beau can be protective in some circumstances (e.g., not wanting his neuter incision to be touched, not wanting to share his person’s attention), although he has continued to improve as he settles. Still, Beau’s potential adopters need to recognize that these behaviors will only be overcome with patience and training. Medical History:  He is microchipped, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and on mothly heartworm prevention. When Beau arrived in rescue, he tested positive for Lyme, but was treated with a course of antibiotics. We noticed occasional limping on his left front leg after intense activities, and x-rays showed a sprain with no deformities or severe conditions. He is currently on a prescription for Trazodone (monthly cost is about $20-$30USD with prices decreasing if generic) to be used for his separation anxiety and any extremely stressful events. Foster Comments: To know Beau is to love Beau. Even with all he has been through, he is an exceptional dog who has so much love and life to give to his future family. He garners pets and praise from everyone he encounters, including our local veterinary staff, visiting friends, and our busy families. He deserves those pets and praise with a family that is understanding of his needs and eager for the lifetime of love, fun, and laughter that Beau will surely take with him. We will miss this big, beautiful boy, but we take solace in knowing that Beau's journey will continue with a family who cherishes him as much as we do. His boundless affection and unwavering loyalty will undoubtedly bring joy and warmth to their home, just as he has to ours. Foster Location: East Lansing, MI Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. Story
Socialization/training: Monika loves all people, adults and children. She can “talk/roo” nearly any dog to chase and play with her. She quickly wiggles her way into the hearts of everyone that meets her. She’s the size that’s loved by all, bigger than a puppy but half the size of an average Setter. She was difficult to house train and still has an occasional “accident” in the house. She learned the doggie door all on her own. She loves treats but is so wiggly that it took a while to learn “sit” but masters it now. She knows her name and has pretty good recall, unless of course she’s distracted by a bird or rabbit in the yard. She has also taught herself how to open lever type door handles and can reach the countertops despite her tiny size, all when you’re not looking, of course. All of that in mind, she has been trusted in the house a few hours alone with two foster siblings and done well. She seems younger than her stated age and is still learning the house rules. Crate trained:   Monika is not fond of the crate but once in, she is okay for a few hours. She definitely would prefer to sleep with her foster siblings at night. Leash trained:   We are still working on leash walking. She is quite the hunter and very aware of her surroundings. She pulls, which at times can be a bit much despite her tiny size, but she really enjoys a walk and walks 3+ miles a day. She wears a harness for walks. Activity Level :  Monika is very high energy, almost that of a puppy which is why I believe she is much younger than her estimated age. She seems more like a year old. She likes to play with her foster siblings from the time her eyes open and for hours at a time. She is very vocal when she wants to play, consisting of a fabulous roo and bark mixed! She loves to run and chase and be chased by her friends at the dog park. She also loves all dog toys. Fence:  A 5’ fence at a minimum is required. She almost scaled a 6’ block wall trying to get a bird. Supervision in the yard is also recommended. Behavior:   Monika has a puppy like playfulness. When you need her to calm down she is easy to scoop up and snuggle and she will quickly melt into your neck and arms and soak up all the attention. She is a very loving dog. Medical History:  Monika had some gastrointestinal issues in Greece and for many weeks while in foster care. She is currently on a prescription food that has finally seemed to cure the issue. She also chewed her feet a lot when she arrived but was given a CytoPoint injection (allergy shot) which has totally cleared that up. If the chewing were to start again she may need another injection. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Her next leishmaniasis test is due December 2024. Monika originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. Foster Comments:  If you love that “puppy size” that’s Monika! She is definitely Pocket Size at a mere 22 lbs! You can scoop her up and love on her very easily. Even though she still has occasional potty accidents or chews up the landscape lights you just look at her face and all is forgotten! There is something about this petite little girl that will instantly win your heart. She is entertaining the way she interacts with her foster siblings and can coax dogs that have never played before into playing with her. My pups and I have really enjoyed her company. Foster Location: Florence, AZ Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home.
