The Shih Tzu is usually a small dog with large round eyes, pendant or drop ears, and a high set tail carried over the back. They have straight hair that will grow quite long if left unattended. Some Shih Tzu mixes may retain these characteristics while others may have a very different appearance. Size, color, coat and even the shape of the head, ears and eyes will vary dependent on the mix.

It is a myth that dogs that have ‘hair’ like the Shih Tzu, instead of a short coat of fur do not shed. But this myth exists because shedding is less obvious in these dogs. The hair that is shed is more likely to be trapped in the dog’s coat than it is to drop onto the floor or furniture. Therefor it is less likely to be noticed. For this reason it is essential to brush your Shih Tzu several times weekly to avoid having the hair become tangles or matted. Shih Tzu’s also need to have their coats clipped regularly as the hair will grow quite long. The shorter you keep the coat the less work it will be to brush it. Shih Tzu mixes that that have inherited the straight, silky coat will also require frequent brushing and occasional clipping.

All dogs require some degree of exercise and mental stimulation. While Shih Tzus love being a lap dog they can also be quite spunky and truly enjoy playtime. Your Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu mix can be kept fit with daily walks. But they really enjoy interactive games with their people. Given their diminutive size this can be accomplished with simple indoor games or gentle romps in a fended yard. Like many breeds with pendant ears it is essential to keep their ears clean and dry to avoid infections.

Those that share their home with Shih Tzus and Shih Tzu mixes often describe them as great family pets that fit most any living situation. They are charming and lovable, entertaining, and sometimes a bit stubborn! They can thrive in an apartment or condo as well as in a rural setting. But these are indoor pets and cannot be expected to survive living outdoors.

The Top 5 Reasons to Consider Adopting Over Buying a Shih Tzu from a Pet Store or Shih Tzu Breeder:

  1. Adoption is More Affordable - Typically, adoption fees are much less than you’d pay for a Shih Tzu dogs and puppies for sale at a pet store, or even a reputable Shih Tzu breeder. Adopting is especially a great deal because usually rescued dogs and puppies have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and have been spayed or neutered. It all adds up, but when you choose pet adoption you are paying less for a dog or puppy who is just as perfect as one you’d find for sale!
  2. Near Purebreds & Healthy Mixes - Looking for a specific type of dog or puppy? It is estimated that 30% of all shelter animals are purebred, including Shih Tzus. There are also Shih Tzu rescue organizations specifically devoted to rescuing and adopting out only Shih Tzus. On the other hand, you can find your own one-of-a-kind, amazing mixed-breed dog in a shelter. We love those fabulous mutts! Due to a larger gene pool to draw from, often mixed-breed dogs have fewer behavioral problems or health issues, and can even live longer than purebred dogs. In short, whatever you’re looking for you can find at your local shelter or rescue group, and right here on
  3. Be a Hero - Selecting a Shih Tzu rescue group or going to your local animal shelter means that you are saving a dog's life. In truth, you are also making room for another dog to enter the shelter; therefore, you are saving another! When you choose to adopt, you’re an instant hero.
  4. Adult Adoption = Less Stress - Adopting an adult dog has many advantages. Adult dogs in shelters often have already been in homes, and many have already be housebroken or have had obedience-trained. Also, since adult dogs’ personalities are already established, it is easy to tell if they are good with children, or familiar and comfortable with other pets. One thing is certain; adult dogs require less attention and less work than puppies do. Best of all, any rescued dog will be forever grateful you saved their life.
  5. Finding the Right Match - Often rescue group and animal shelter staff and volunteers know the personalities of animals, meaning they will know the individual Shih Tzu dogs and puppies in their care. They will be able to better match you up with a dog that fits your lifestyle and activities. This is one of many advantages to finding an adult Shih Tzu dog for adoption, rather than for sale.
