Indiana Sheltie Rescue's adoption process

Additional adoption info

All shelties are first placed in foster homes to be evaluated for their health and temperament and receive medical care. Our adoption fee is $175, which includes medical care, spaying or neutering, all vaccines, and micro chipping. The adoption fee for dogs over 10 is reduced to $50 in an effort not to lessen their value but to increase interest in adopting senior dogs. Each adopter is required to fill out an application, available either online or by snail mail. Each adopter must also have a home visit. We then work to match the right dog to the right home situation in an effort to find a permanent home for each sheltie for the remainder of his or her life. If you see one of our dogs that particularly appeals to you, please feel free to apply for that dog (although the pre-adoptive procedures still need to be completed).

We also have an adoption contract to be signed before the adoption is complete, at which time you receive copies of all medical records. Should something fail with the adoption after all this effort, the sheltie must be returned to Indiana Sheltie Rescue.

About Indiana Sheltie Rescue

Indiana Sheltie Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation consisting of a small group of volunteers who have come together to help homeless shelties. We are always looking for additional volunteers, and capable and loving foster homes to offer a temporary safe haven to Shetland Sheepdogs. Our shelties make their way into our program as owner surrenders, shelter dogs, or are found as strays by caring individuals.

Because we are a small group of volunteers, most of our work is done within the borders of Indiana. Our number one concern is the future and safety of our rescued shelties and we are anxious to hear from you if you think our program is appropriate for you!

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
