You’re about to meet the most special dog who charms everyone she comes in contact with!! She loves all people and thinks everyone should be her best friend. This is Edith and she is a gorgeous blue and tan French Bulldog who is 6yrs old. She weighs about 20 lbs. Now before we get all our Frenchie loving people wanting to adopt, we have to stress that it is very important that anyone interested in Edith read her bio in full, as she is a special needs little gal. It’s nothing that slows her down and she certainly doesn’t know that she is differently abled, but it is something that her new family needs to embrace, manage and love her for.
See, Edith was abandoned and ended up in a shelter as an unclaimed stray. Terribly, Edith had a herniated disc injury in her back. She had limited mobility in her back end and was dragging her legs at times. She was also skeletal thin with a dry coat and had obviously been vastly overbred. Edith had no muscle tone in her body at all and it appears she must have been living in a cage or small kennel for her life, pumping out puppies to line a greedy person’s pockets. Thankfully the shelter saw a dog that was happy, friendly and eternally optimistic and they reached out to rescues to find a spot for her. We are Bulldog lovers and took her on fully prepared to schedule the back surgery we expected she would need. We were very pleased to discover upon meeting Edith for the first time that she was much more mobile than we were thinking…she was walking around on her leash, with her wonky back end, super thrilled to be meeting us. We got right to work on the vet visit, and then an appointment with a neurology specialist at MOVH, and were really disappointed to learn that unfortunately, too much time had passed since the disc herniated, to when we got her; and the potential risks of surgery outweighed the possible benefits. We were grateful to the neurologist for explaining the risks and rewards of surgery fully to us and allowing us to make an educated decision about her care. We chose to not do the surgery as the risks were too great seeing as how we didn’t know the timeline of when her injury occurred. Her back is healing itself but it will only heal to a certain extent. What we do know is that Edith is closing in on that and we can say that as she is happy, pain free, and able to get around very well but she has limited feeling in her back legs. She walks with a wonky, crossing over gait in the back end and her rear legs don’t always know where they are going. It’s more noticeable when she is walking slowly, and much less noticeable when she is racing around…and let me tell ya, she can race around!! Edith doesn’t need any assistance with walking and she can sit, lie down, stand all on her own. She has a wonky back end but she has a solid front end and as a Frenchie, now that she is eating top quality food and getting daily exercise, she has a muscular chest that really helps with her mobility. We also have a doggie wheelchair for her that allows her back legs to still move and do their part, but offers support so she doesn’t tire as quickly, or drag her back end. We only use the wheelchair when going for walks so that she can come on the whole walk with the other dogs. In the yard and around the house she doesn’t need it. But it is really nice to have to allow her to go on walks like the other dogs do and it makes her happy. She has no issues at all with her wheelie and roars around in it. And its adorable!!! Her wheelchair will go with her when she is adopted. We are happy to say that along with being mobile now, she also has control over her bladder and is able to do all bathroom duties on her own. She does though, sometimes squirt a bit of urine when getting up or if excited, so she wears a diaper in the home to protect against that. It doesn’t happen all the time, and often she has a clean diaper, but she doesn’t mind the diaper at all and stands nicely for us to put it on when she comes in from outside, and it catches any unintended squirts that may happen. She is clean in her crate and doesn’t need her diaper when crated. She will come with a nice selection of doggy diapers…we just need her new person or family to be fully committed to caring for a dog that has mobility special needs and are fine with a dog that is diapered in the home. Edith is currently in physio which is helping a lot with her mobility and balance. She loves physio and took to the water treadmill right away with most dogs don’t. This dog just has no fears, she is up for anything and has a fantastic “can do” attitude which makes working with her so enjoyable.
We really want to focus on that all that is great about Edith as there is so much more to this little dog than her disability. Edith is a joyful clown of a dog and everything we all love about Frenchies. SHe is a big cuddle bug and loves to be on your lap. She loves her walks and gets so excited when you put her leash on. She is equally good on walks around the neighbourhood, or on a long line out in the fields or on trails. If she is always to be walking on cement or pavement she should wear little booties or socks on her back feet to protect them as sometimes her back feet scrape the ground. On the grass or softer surfaces, this isn’t required. Edith is great in the car and is a fantastic travel companion. We crate her in the car for her safety and she settles in quietly for the ride. She is eternally happy and always has a grin on her face. She is a dog that makes people smile when they see her and she is always happy to meet a new friend. Edith is a very social little dog and she thinks everyone should be a buddy of hers. She will be your shadow in the house and follow you everywhere.
Edith is great with other dogs and can nicely live with another dog. It would be best for the other dog to be of similar size to her, or if larger, then an older, more mature dog, would be best. Edith doesn’t like roughhouse type play with other dogs and we need to guard against further back injury, so playing with a large dog or an excitable dog would not be ideal. She is a bit of a referee and will interject if she feels the other dogs are getting too feisty in their play so her forever home, should it have a dog in it, should have a mature and calm dog that will be more of a companion to her than a playmate. She would be fine as the only dog in the home as well. Edith loves chewing on dog toys and playing with stuffies. She is one of those dogs that likes to grab a toy and parade around with it when happy, so when you come home or when we are headed out the door there will be a sweet and adorable Frenchie roaming around with a chewy in her mouth as a present. Its adorable! Edith is good with the cats in her foster home, but these cats are very dog savvy and do not run from dogs. Edith will chase a cat that runs from her or swats at her, but a chill cat that can either stay out of her way, or interact calmly with her would be just fine. Edith would be fine in a home with children old enough to be aware of her back injury and to be careful with her. Older children who won’t topple down on top of her or push on her back would be just fine.
Edith would like a home where she isn’t left for a full work day. She is crated when we leave and does well with this, but she is only left for a few hours at a time. When out of her crate she needs to get out to pee asap and so having her crate set up close to the door to the yard works well for her. Edith enjoys the fenced yard in her foster home and absolutely LOVES rolling in the grass, and sunning herself on a dog bed on the deck. A yard isn’t mandatory for her, but it’s a plus that’s for sure. When she is out in the yard you will fully see just how able this disabled dog is. Edith loves to explore the yard and maneuvers along in her own special way without issue.
Adopters with previous French Bulldog or other Bulldog experience are preferred, as they are a special breed with specific needs to keep them happy and healthy. She will need to have her wrinkles cleaned on a regular basis as well as special attention to any potential allergies associated with food. She is doing well on the food she is on in our care, which is a top quality diet, and she should be kept on this. Frenchies are prone to environmental allergies and she may need allergy meds throughout her life, although so far she has been ok and showing no signs of having any allergies. Adopters should also regularly maintain her teeth through brushing and/or dental treats. Potential adopters should be aware of possible breed specific health issues and commit to any financial needs she may have in the future to maintain her health. This is a breed that comes with an assortment of potential medical issues and they are known as a high maintenance breed for upkeep and medical care. Her family needs to be fully aware of this and be financially able to care for anything that Edith will need in her life. Which leads us to the question, what does the future look like for Edith? This is hard for us to say exactly. Our vet has told us that there is nothing holding her back from being adopted, we just need to find that special person or family that has a kind heart and is willing to work with a special needs dog, and is financially secure should she have any future back issues. She still has time for her back to heal further and get more mobility, however she may never become more mobile. If she continues to get better, fantastic! We can say in the time we have had her she has strengthened and is more mobile than when we got her. If she stays as she is, that’s ok. She is happy, pain free and she is mobile. She can do the deck stairs, she can get around well, she is A-OK just as she is. Could she suffer another herniated disc? Yes, that could happen, or it won’t. We don’t know. But with Frenchie’s that is a risk you take. This is something that they are prone to. Should this happen, she would require back surgery immediately to fix it. Her family needs to guard against this by not letting her become overweight, by keeping her lean and muscular, and by not letting her jump up on the couch or jump down from the couch, bed etc. When lifting her, support her entire back. Don’t let her engage in overly rough wrestling with other dogs…just general things to keep her back safe.
What we can tell you is that Edith is SO worth the extra maintenance and care, and even that special care is minimal. It’s easy to put herdiaper on…and we don’t care if she has a little squirt in it…oh well. Toss it in the wash and put on another. She is low energy in the home and super easy to have around. She likes to have a nice bed to chew her Nylabones in. She likes naps. She follows you around the house but settles in whatever room you are in. We block off the stairs so she doesn’t go up them as she would certainly try. She is quiet in the home and such an easy dog to live with. She loves cuddles and she makes us laugh all the time. She is just so special. We know that there is a Frenchie loving person or family out there that will see what this amazing dog has to offer.
If you are interested in Edith send us in an application and be sure to tell us in there why you feel that you would be a great fit for Edith. The more you can tell us about your home, your knowledge of this breed etc the better. We know that there is super kind and compassionate person/people out there that would just love to have a happy little Frenchie companion and we look forward to meeting them
