Greyhounds are the fastest of all dog breeds, with the ability to run up to 45 miles per hour! The fastest speed for a racehorse is 43 miles per hour. It only takes Greyhounds three strides to get to 30 mph.

Greyhound does not actually mean grey-colored dog. The name comes from the old Saxon word "grei," which means beautiful. This is perhaps because it is so beautiful to see a greyhound running at full tilt.

The Greyhound has a much more peripheral range of vision than most other dogs. They can see 270 degrees, whereas humans can only see 180 degrees. As sighthounds, they have long been used in "coursing," which is where dogs hunt by sight instead of smell.
