Adopting a Pumi

Frequently asked questions about acquiring an Pumi - the pros and cons of adopting versus going through a breeder, and associated costs.

You can adopt a Pumi at a much lower cost than buying one from a breeder. The cost of adopting a Pumi from a shelter or rescue is typically $50 to $300. This adoption fee often covers an initial exam, microchipping, spay/neuter, vaccines, and preventatives. In contrast, buying a  Pumi from a breeder can be prohibitively expensive. Depending on their breeding, they can cost $1,500 to $3,000.

The easiest way to adopt a Pumi is through a rescue that specializes in Pumis or herding breeds in general. A great place to start is with a breed search on Adopt a Pet, which will show you all the available Pumis in your search radius.

Pumi fun facts

Fun Facts:

The Pumi has been used as a livestock dog since the mid-1800s. They were used to guard the farm where they lived, herd the livestock, capture and kill vermin.

All Pumis are born black and then lighten in color with age.

First arriving on American soil in the 1980s, the Pumi is still quite rare in the United States.
