Adopting a Sloughi

Frequently asked questions about acquiring an Sloughi - the pros and cons of adopting versus going through a breeder, and associated costs.

The easiest way to adopt a Sloughi is through a rescue that specializes in sighthounds or Sloughis. A great place to start is by creating a breed search on Adopt a Pet. The search will show you all the available Sloughis in your area.

You can adopt a Sloughi at a much lower cost than buying one from a breeder. The cost of adopting a Sloughi is around $300 in order to cover the expenses of caring for the dog before adoption. In contrast, buying Sloughis from breeders can be prohibitively expensive. Depending on their breeding, they usually cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000.

Sloughi fun facts

Fun Facts:

Sloughi is Arabic for "fast as the wind."

In 1850, French General Daumas reported back after being stationed in Northern Africa about this breed. He stated the Sloughi was the only dog treated as family. Bedouin and Berber women sometimes even breastfed their puppies if the mother was unable to!

The sandy-colored coat of the Sloughi allowed it to blend in with the North African desert, rendering it perfectly camouflaged to hunt gazelle, jackal, fox, and boar.
