Animal Service League, Inc.

Animal Service League is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) rescue/foster organization first begun in 1988. It was not until 1995 that the organization began to focus efforts toward rescuing dogs and cats, rehoming them into loving "forever homes." Most of our rescues have come from kill shelters across the state, although some are also owner releases. All the foster animals are kept in one location and afforded accommodations similar to those in a "normal" home environment. All basic vet work is done before any pet is adopted out (spay/neuter, health tests, vaccinations and microchipping), and we also provided other vet services that may be needed for an individual pet, such as dental work, corrective surgeries or heartworm treatment. As a non-profit organization, we must rely on the generosity and support of the public through adoption fees and direct donations. Animal Service League also provides a low-cost "Spay/Neuter Certificate Program" whereby pet owners can get their dogs or cats spayed or neutered for a nominal fee through our cooperating vet clinic. Other services may be available at discount as well, determined on an individual need basis. We strive to provide the best care for our fosters and to the community by educating the public in responsible pet care and to help get every dog and cat in our area spayed and neutered in an effort to curb the pet overpopulation problem and promote higher standards of pet health.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process consists of an on-line application, available on our website, www.animalserviceleague.org, included in which we will ask for both veterinary and personal references as well as general pet-related information. Applications submitted will be acknowledged promptly, and references processed as quickly as possible. We do in-home visits for applicants living within one hour's drive from Dowagiac and require home photos from "long-distance" applicants, which are described in our acknowledgement. Upon preliminary approval of the application, an appointment is scheduled for the applicant to come meet the pet. It is highly likely that the adoption can be concluded at this meeting, and that you can take your new "fur kid" home that very day! Adoption fees are: $195 for all purebred puppies and adult dogs; $145 for mixed breeds. "Senior" dogs (age 8 and up for large breeds and age 10 and up for small breeds) are discounted 25%. There are also discounted fees for senior adopters (25%) and in-county (Cass County, MI) adopters.
