Genesee County Animal Shelter can only take in dogs from Genesee County. They are able to take in cats from the county if there is space available. Please call ahead.
You do not have to be a resident of Genesee County to adopt from the Shelter.
Volunteers For Animals is a nonprofit and all volunteer organization which works in partnership with the Genesee County Animal Shelter by providing the many additional services for the benefit of dogs and cats at the shelter. We assist in the Shelter doing things such as completing adoptions, walking dogs, cleaning, and grooming. We cover the costs to spay and neuter cats and dogs, any vet care that is needed and the extras such as treats, blankets and toys. We organize fundraisers and maintain a website with photos and descriptions of all the available animals at the Shelter.

Our Adoption Process:
To adopt an animal you must complete an application and be approved. There is a $40 fee for any animal. If the animal is not spayed or neutered, there is a $35 deposit which will be returned upon proof of surgery. If Volunteers For Animals spayed or neutered the animal, we are suggesting adopters make a donation of $35 to help with the cost of the surgery which is significantly less than if you had to go to a vet. All of that donation will go directly towards spaying and neutering the next animal we take into the Shelter. All dogs must be licensed before leaving the Shelter. Please note that public offices that do dog licensing are not open on Saturdays and Sundays.
Dog adoption and cat
adoption saves lives. Adopt
a dog or adopt a cat and you'll
have a friend for life! What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting
a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats
for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs
and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of
dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed
is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten
breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat
or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt
a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane
society or pet rescue group.
