About Our Shelter:

The shelter has been here since 1968 and was call the Humane Society of Smith County. In 2008 the shelter became the Humane Society of East Texas. The shelter severed all ties with the city and county animal control and became as close to a no-kill as possible. Our Euthinazed animals would run about 600 a month, now it runs about 20 per month. Those animals are usually requested or injuried beyond medical help. Dropping contracts with the City and County, this facility lost over $100,000 a year in income. Now our funding is through adoptions, surrenders and fundraisers.

The shelter is located at 1823 CR 386, Tyler, TX 75708
Animals are available for adoption Tuesday - Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The shelter has an off site adoption at the Broadway Square Mall the first Saturday each month and at Atwoods Home and Ranch the 3rd Saturday each month. Fund raisers include Cause for the Paw Wine Tasting and Concert, staring Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton and several other country western stars. This is held in May. Pets in the Park is held in October. This October 24, will be celebrating this events 11th year.

Our Adoption Process:

Adopter must fill out a pre-adoption application.
The application is reviewed before a pet can be adopted to them. The fee for dogs ar $130.00 and $115.00 for cats. This includes having animal spayed/neutered, all basic vaccinations, rabies vaccinations, micro chipped, and 50% of to Tyler Obedience Training group.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
