Gordon Highlander Rescue Program's adoption process

Additional adoption info

Adoption of a Gordon Setter through our program is by written application. We ask all potential adopting families to fill out this form as completely as possible. Contact us by email or phone to receive an application. Each application is reviewed by the Rescue Committee to establish the best possible match between dog and family. When we receive your application, we will call your references and make arrangements for a Gordon Setter Club of America member in your area to make personal contact with you about adopting a Rescue dog.

About Gordon Highlander Rescue Program

We are the Illinois/southern Wisconsin rescue committee for the Gordon Setter Club of America. Dogs come into our Rescue Program in a variety of ways. Some of them were picked up as strays by animal control facilities and others have been released to us by previous owners who could no longer keep them. While in foster care, we provide these dogs with basic obedience training.

Occasionally we have other breeds of dogs available for adoption if they enter our foster care program with a Gordon Setter from the same home.

Rescue Gordon Setters are not sold or given away. We ask that all adopting families make a donation for the Rescue care of the dog they adopted. Our dogs are fostered in the homes of people knowledgeable about the Gordon Setter breed so that we can have the best possible understanding of their personalities. Medical and maintenance bills for most dogs in our care are approximately $300, so by providing that donation, you allow us to continue to care for other rescued Gordons. To the best of our abilities, we will provide a complete health record of the dog you adopt. Dogs are spayed or neutered before adoption, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
