My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please pick Penny...she's priceless! Penny is a happy go lucky Jack that loves everyone she meets. She's an energetic friendly girl that is 7 years old. That's a young age for a Jack. They are tireless loyal dogs that love to be part of family activities. Penny would love to find a loving family to call her own. She would probably be best as an only pet. She likes some dogs but not others and not a lover of cats. Penny is the "go to" dog when one is needed to represent Friendship at an event. She loves visiting the seniors at the nursing home.

On February 06, 2014 Penny was selected to be one of Friendship's Prison Dogs. On that date she left to go to the Grafton Correctional Institution to start her training. Each Prison Dog in the program receives approximately six hours of training each day that consists of basic command drills such as sit, stay, recall, socialization with other dogs, exercise walking the compound and play time with primary and secondary trainers that work in shifts over a 24-hour period. The trainers are selected using a strict criteria sheet based on their conduct and court record. They follow the Good Canine Citizenship Course. Each dog has to pass a series of training tests conducted by Don Hitchens, Friendship APLs Dog Trainer, in order to graduate from the program. The average time a dog spends in the training program is twelve weeks.

If you are interested in adopting a Prison Dog, adoption applications are now being accepted. They can be downloaded at friendshipapl.org under ADOPT-FIND A FRIEND. A limited amount of apps will be accepted for each Prison Dog. They must be hand delivered to Friendship. If you have any questions, please contact the shelter at 440-322-4321.
