My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATED BIO 01/20/2014: MacKenzie is a sweet little 4 year old 5 lb girlie who is being fostered in The Villages, FL (1 hour north of Orlando).

Initially, we thought MacKenzie was hit by a car on 12/28/2013; at the shelter, she was crying a lot and walking into corners and acting very distressed initially. She could not eat by herself and had to be syringe-fed. She had such a severe flea infestation that she was weak and severely anemic, requiring daily iron to build up her blood count. The experts told us that it can take up to 4-6 weeks for dogs with head trauma to recover.

Well, look at this beautiful girlie today just 3 weeks later! She has fully recovered from her head trauma and is healthy and happy. However………after having MacKenzie in her home for this period of time, Foster Mom now strongly suspects that she was not hit by a car since she had no road rash, bruises, abrasions or broken bones (she did have a small gash on her head). We now suspect that poor MacKenzie has been abused her entire life – it just so happened that on 12/28/2013 her “keepers” hit her way too hard in the head and she suffered a head trauma. It breaks our hearts to think about how this sweet little girl must have survived her terribly abusive life this long.

MacKenzie shows signs of being very fearful of anyone touching her – she will allow it ~ but it must come slowly so that she can see your hand. Even now, when FM pets her body, Kenzie’s head will turn to ensure the hand is loving and not hurtful. If startled, she will nip, but who can blame her? She will need a very loving and patient owner who understands the horrible trauma she has suffered and is willing to lovingly help her to trust people again.

MacKenzie gets along with other dogs, but doesn't seem to enjoy their company. She does not play with toys, although she is very curious when taken on walks, which she loves. She wants to pick up everything in her mouth and smell it and enjoy being a beloved companion dog again. She is a nervous little dog, but we feel that will abate once she is in a loving forever home. Her perfect home would be with someone who is retired and has a lot of time to spend with her. Another docile dog would be okay, but NO children, please. We are prayerful that someone will read about this precious little girlie and want to make her their own. Could that someone be you?

UPDATED BIO 1/5/2014: MacKenzie is a sweet little 4 year old 5 lb girl who is being fostered in The Villages, FL. She was presumably hit by a car on 12/28/2013. While MacKenzie was crying a lot and walking into corners and acting very distressed initially, she is making small improvements every day. She is no longer crying and is walking a little more steadily. She is eating with the assistance of syringe feedings, and unfortunately is showing signs of kennel cough on top of everything she has been through.

MacKenzie had such a severe flea infestation that she is weak and severely anemic. We have been told by the experts that it can take up to 4-6 weeks for dogs with head trauma to recover. We are giving her plenty of food, water, iron to promote red blood cell production, antibiotics to treat her upper respiratory infection, and most importantly, TLC to try and help her feel loved and safe.

MacKenzie went back to the vet today for a recheck and will be making another visit 1/8. Please keep MacKenzie in your prayers as she hopefully continues on her path to recovery.

INITIAL BIO 12/29/2013: MEET MacKENZIE! She is a 4 year old 5 lb female yorkshire terrier who was rescued from a high-kill shelter. It is believed that she was hit by a car, with no apparent fractures, but possible head trauma.
