My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

EBONY is a young, black energetic female mix breed, described by the shelter as a Border Collie/Flat Coated Retriever. She is approximately 50 lbs and is an exuberant, licking, tail wagging, water/mud loving bundle of joy. Ebony appears to be an English Lab/Retriever mix to us. We are unsure if Ebony has any Border Collie in her at all, but, that does not make this wonderful girl any less deserving of saving her life and finding a 'Forever Home'.

Picked up as a stray, this Happy Go Lucky girl's story almost ended at the shelter. Ebony's coming to BCIN can only be described as FATE. One of our volunteers was at a 'high kill' shelter we seldom visit to pick up two dogs when one of the shelter staff asked her to take a look at a 'special girl'. The shelter staff was advocating on her behalf as they needed extra help with getting Ebony out of the shelter. Ebony, a staff favorite had been moved, shuffled and out right hidden to prevent her from being euthanized. Unfortunately, the staff had been caught by their supervisors and they were instructed if this girl was not adopted/pulled within 24 hours, she was to be euthanized.

It seemed Ebony was a victim of 'Black Dog Syndrome' and an inexperienced kennel volunteer who labeled her as Dog Aggressive when she growled back at another dog. Our volunteer contacted us with her story and we decided since it was a rare time for us having room available, although Ebony is a mix of 'questionable heritage', we would consider taking her in. This loving girl who had won the hearts of so many definitely deserved a chance. Our volunteer took her out and temperament tested her. Ebony never even looked at the other kenneled dogs barking and growling at her as they walked by. Needless to say, her loving, exuberant personality won us over. Ebony has a coat that feels like satin and 'smiles,' wagging her tail so hard she nearly folds in half!

Ebony is being fostered by a long time volunteer in the Riverside area. Due to being labeled aggressive, she is socialized with a large, very stable pack of Huskies, Dobermans and herding breeds where she has been exposed to several other dogs, large numbers and is doing fantastic. Ebony plays rough at times and can be a bit pushy, however, she is not 'dog aggressive'. Simply a bit of a dominant girl who stands her ground when challenged. Ebony LOVES WATER and will lay and play in any mud hole, water bucket or etc she can find. This happy girl gets along with both male and female dogs.

Ebony truly is a Diamond In the Rough. Ebony is a sweet, loving girl who wants to form a close bond with her person. Ebony is crate trained, well mannered in the house, will walk on a leash but is in need of obedience due to her strength and has been good with children. However, due to her size and enthusiasm we recommend any children in the home be 10 years or older. She has a strong personality, therefore we recommend a confident, self-assured owner. We believe her ideal playmate, if any, would be a LARGE MALE dog. Ebony's drive, playfulness and history dictates she be placed in a home with NO CATS.

If you are interested in meeting our dogs, please go on line and fill out an adoption application. We require a pre-approved application to be on file before any meet and greets are scheduled. The electronic application can be found on our website at www.bordercolliesinneed.org/border_collie_rescue_and_adoptions/adoption_application.html
