My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lucy is a 1year old happy black Golden Retriever/Collie X. Her coat is soft and furry, her face is petite and delicate and her eyes are big and brown. She is named after the Beatle’s song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds because her personality is so sparkly and fun. She knows her name very well and her head will snap up when you say it.

Lucy was abandoned in the country and living in a culvert before she was live trapped and brought to a rural animal control facility. How her previous owners could abandon her or not come for her is beyond comprehension. It's for the best though because Lucy deserves a family who is as devoted to her as she will be to them. She needs to belong in a home where she will not be allowed to roam free and get lost, and where she can feel safe and be confident.

Lucy LOVES to be outside, even in these cold temperatures, she will just lay on the step and watch and listen and smell the world. She is most happy when you are out with her. Just to know you are close so she can come and get a short snuggle and off again she goes to chase a ball or another dog. She loves to play ball and has discovered how to bring it back to you to throw over and over. She loves all toys, stuffed, unstuffed, and anything chewable. She is so funny to watch as she tosses toys in the air and chases them, content to make a game up all by herself.

Lucy likes to be with you, she will lie on the floor in whatever room you are in, just to hang out. If you are sitting on the couch, she may climb into your lap and snuggle, but not for long; she is very furry and gets hot quickly. But she does love her snuggles. At the end of a busy day, you will find Lucy quietly sleeping at your feet. Lucy has been such a good girl during her stay with us and to top it off has been quickly housetrained. She is crate trained and sleeps in her crate at night with the door open. She doesn't have to be in her crate when we are away from the house. Lucy didn't know what a doggie bed was but now she has three to choose from and enjoys laying on them with a toy.

Lucy would do well in an active home situation. Since she is still a young dog, she is learning proper manners indoors and she is doing extremely well. She would do well in a home with a big fenced yard to run and play in. She enjoys her walks and knows that the gentle leader means a walk! She will sit and let you put it on her and be ready to go at a moments notice. She is still learning to walk on a gentle leader at your side, she would much rather run. She will fight it for a bit, but eventually accept and settle in for the walk. She would do well with a runner as she likes to go straight in a line and not back and forth.

Lucy is being taught basic obedience in her foster home and now knows "sit" and has been taught to sit upon greeting people. Lucy is working hard on not jumping up. Lucy can also shake a paw; she knew that before she came here, so someone has spent time with her. Lucy’s new family should commit to continuing her obedience training to bring out the best in this very smart dog.

Lucy is good with dogs and has settled in nicely with her foster dog brother and sister. She watches her big brother and tries to copy him. She would enjoy another dog in the home to play with but this is not a necessity for her. Lucy would do just as well being the only dog and getting all the attention to herself. Lucy is also well behaved with the cat and ignores him for the most part and only needing the occasional reminder that she's not allowed to chase him. Lucy is not being fostered in a home with children but we believe with her lovely spirit she would do fine with older children.

Everything is new to Lucy, but she is willing to experience new things with you. She does not like to ride in the car. She cries and paces and we feel the car brings back bad memories of abandonment for her. We are working on taking her on short trips with treats to teach her the car is a good thing. She is slowly learning.

Lucy is looking for a forever home to share her love. Could this be yours? If you think so, please head over to www.pounddog.ca and fill out an applicaton.
