Piper is a hansom brindle Great Dane. He was named Piper because he was flown to us on a private Piper plane.
Piper is estimated to be about 5 years old. He has extremely sweet and loving personalty. Unfortunately he is not is very good shape right now. He was turned into the shelter by a woman who said he had a miserable life. He is so very skinny, you can see all his chest, hip and rib bones sticking out. He has infected bite wounds all over his body. Evidently he was attacked by a couple of dogs and he was too weak to defend himself. He was taken to the shelter (in Paris, TX) and they put him on IV for a couple of Days. Thanks to hard work of a few volunteers, a transport was arrange through Pilots & Paws. Piper was flown into Austin and he is now with our rescue getting the care he needs.
We took Piper to the Central Texas Specialty Vet Hospital for a full exam. Good news is that his bite wound definitely getting better and thanks to the strong antibiotics he is on, the infection and swelling is almost all gone, but there is some concern about a tear to his tendon. Since he is still limping, we decided to do X-rays. The X-rays showed that Piper has gun pellets in his rear and front foot. He was shot and one of the bullet fractured his rear toe bone. Normally, the vet would put a brace on the foot, but since the front leg is healing from the bite, we could not limit his footing. We will restrict his activities and continue the antibiotics for another 3 weeks. Hopefully by then all will be healed.
It will be a little while before Piper is all healed up, but he is on the way to a full recovery. He is getting lots of meals throughout the day. He already gained 9 lbs.
