My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Izzy. She's a friendly 2 year old Lab mix that was adopted and returned because her family moved. Izzy went through the prison program and is a prison graduate but her owners never kept up with her training. Although she knows some of her commands she will need to continue obedience training. Izzy has lots of energy and would benefit from a fenced in yard and active family. Because of her activity level children in the family should be over 10 years of age.

Early in March 2014 Izzy was selected to go back to the Prison Program for additional training. On that date she left to go to the Grafton Correctional Institution to start his training. Each Prison Dog in the program receives approximately six hours of training each day that consists of basic command drills such as sit, stay, recall, socialization with other dogs, exercise walking the compound and play time with primary and secondary trainers that work in shifts over a 24-hour period. The trainers are selected using a strict criteria sheet based on their conduct and court record. They follow the Good Canine Citizenship Course. Each dog has to pass a series of training tests conducted by Don Hitchens, Friendship APLs Dog Trainer, in order to graduate from the program. The average time a dog spends in the training program is twelve weeks.

If you are interested in adopting a Prison Dog, adoption applications are now being accepted. They can be downloaded at friendshipapl.org under ADOPT-FIND A FRIEND. A limited amount of apps will be accepted for each Prison Dog. They must be hand delivered to Friendship. If you have any questions, please contact the shelter at 440-322-4321.
