Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Chico, previously known as Jumbo, was adopted from us two weeks ago by a couple impressed with his looks. We had taken him in from an owner who didn't report any particular behavioral problems other than being a bit "unpredictable." (She turned him in because of her own health problems.) She said he had never bitten anyone but was sometimes "overprotective." In the new home that we placed Chico in, however, he must have felt the new couple wasn't "alpha" enough and decided to try his luck being the alpha-dog in the home. On several occasions he took things belonging to the woman and refused to let her take them back. Her purse, her car keys, etc., were taken and kept by Chico where he guarded them and would not let the woman retrieve them; if she tried, he growled, lunged, and acted like Cujo! He seemed to have more respect for the husband, probably because men are generally more dominant than women, even though his first owner was a woman, certainly one who was more alpha-savvy than the new owners. On the positive side, Chico is housebroken, good with other dogs, knows his commands, and is "super-intelligent." The home we are now seeking for Chico is one experienced with alpha-dog behavior and not intimidated by a dog's efforts to be the one in control in his new home. Chico will be 3 years old in April, 2014.
