Sophie is a three-year-old Poodle mix who according to her paperwork is a Maltipoo (Maltese/Poodle mix). She weighs 18.4 lbs., and is a non-shedding dog who may even be HYPOALLERGENIC. We would say that she is still a very young dog as Poodles tend to live very long lives, sometimes to age 19 or 20. Sophie was acquired by way of a Good Samaritan, who took Sophie in when the owners were moving and were not going to take Sophie with them. Therefore, we do have some history as well as vet records on Sophie since she was a puppy. As I understand it, Sophie was primarily an outdoor dog who was “allowed” to sleep in the laundry room if it was too cold or raining. So now, Sophie is learning more about the good life being an indoor dog while at Angel’s Heart and is recently placed in one of the rescue’s foster homes with two dogs and three cats.

Sophie is a playful and semi-active type who enjoys playing with other dogs or participating in activities. She gets along very well with other dogs after she gets to know them a bit. At first meet, she has a tendency to bark when new dogs and people first come into the yard or house, but soon after, realizes that friends have come to visit, and then, she is fine. Few Poodle types actually play with other dogs enthusiastically like Sophie does (she tends to “play bark” and “play growl” when playing but this is harmless banter) as they only care about the humans, so we think that this is something special about Sophie – her interest towards, and playfulness with other dogs. She is taller and slightly bigger than most “Maltipoos” so she can walk, hike, run, or even go to the dog park. She will not be happy just sitting around. She is not hyper, but is a smart dog who will be bored if life is mainly just being a couch potato, or waiting around all day for her people to come home. Sophie gets the other dogs to chase her, goes down in play bows, get toys and ropes to play with the other dogs. She is not so big on entertaining herself, rather, she enjoys interactive play. Sophie is a great watchdog who will alert bark if something or someone is new from the normal pattern. She was groomed 2/6 and shorn short, but her coat will grow, and she will be fluffier than you see her in our photos. She is a no shedding dog and is most likely HYPOALLERGENIC, but will need grooming approximately four times a year.

Sophie is crate-trained and sleeps quietly in her crate throughout the night, but tends to dislike the crate when you’re leaving the house and you crate her. She is learning to enjoy a rawhide chew at bedtime. She is potty-trained, however, I facilitate potty and also leave a door open throughout the day. Potty reinforcement is still needed in any new environment. Because Sophie was an outdoor dog, she is somewhat under-socialized and we are working with her on better recall and not thinking that she is in trouble when called. Whomever adopts Sophie will acquire a fun, sweet, affectionate girl who is a great size and who will not shed, but who will still need more work on some training aspects. She walks VERY WELL on the leash and does well in public while on the leash walking or being taken places.

The best fit for Sophie is a home with another dog where both dogs can play and entertain each other, or as an only dog in the home where the people include her in lots of activities. A home without cats is probably best – Sophie does tend to lock on a bit too much with respect to the cats, and most cats probably will not be very tolerant of her “cat attitude.” We are looking for a loving and semi-active environment for Sophie, but at the same time one that provides some structure and boundaries. We tend to think she would love kids, but we would prefer them to be older since she is still working on some training aspects and good recall. She is an affectionate girl, who does respond well to gentle correction.

Sophie is spayed, de-wormed, vaccinated including rabies, and micro-chipped. If you are interested in Sophie, please contact Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com.
