My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

INITIAL BIO 02/21/2014: Gadget is a 9.5 pound, approximately 3 year old, male Yorkie being fostered in Clearwater, FL.

Gadget was rescued with over 20 other dogs like him from a puppy hoarder's home. He was so skinny and nervous! Gadget gave such sweet kisses through the gates he was quickly adopted from the shelter. His adoptive family did a GREAT job of getting some weight on his bones and starting to teach him some manners. After a few months, they realized how much more attention this sweet little guy needs to retrain some of his previously learned behavior and with full time jobs they worried he might need more than they could give. Sooooo..... HELLO UYR!

Obviously Gadget has experience being around other dogs but his "puppyhood" has taught him to be nervous around them when dealing with treats, food, toys, or even the person he wants to claim. Sharing was not something he was taught growing up with ALL of those other dogs around. He is learning to take treats nicely (not with his entire mouth around all of your fingers). He waits to eat his food until he is sure it is safe for him, though we are not yet sure how he decides when it is or is not safe. Gadget is pretty good with learning to play fetch but does not know what to do if another dog wants to play with his toy. He will either drop it and run away or snarl, growl, and snap for it. Gadget loves loves loves to be in your lap and follow you around but if another dog comes too close to your lap he might protest. If another dog is already in the lap he seeks, he may simply lay on top or very close to him until he manages to scoot the nuisance out of his way.

House training.... Oh, house training.... Gadget grew up in a lawless territory so these new "rules" are completely foreign to him. A regular feeding schedule and limited treats/snacks seem to have started helping. Gadget has started to use the puppy pads to pee but considers the bath mat a similar alternative. Where he should poo seems to be the most confusing new idea for Gadget. Wish him luck!

Gadget needs a calm home. While he loves to run around, get excited, bark excitedly at your return home, etc., he will hide in a quiet room if too many people are in the house. It takes Gadget a while to trust another dog but when he finally feels comfortable, he likes to play & wrestle with them. Usually the wrestling ends with somebody taking it too far and one of the pups getting serious and separating. By the time FM looks around the corner, both dogs will be looking straight ahead on either end of the couch pretending like nothing happened. At least they are listening to each others limits and solving their own problems.

We will keep you updated on Gadget's progress and hopefully continue to have great news to share!
