My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ABOUT BAXTER...
Baxter is AMAZING!!!! He is a stunning 3 1/2 year old bi-color GSD. He has a very high ball drive and all he ever wants to do is play fetch or be in his person's lap getting love. (Yes, I said lap. He is a lapdog!) He will play fetch as long as someone will throw the ball. He loves loves carrying his ball around and even taking it in the house sleeping with it. Baxter is also a stuffed animal thief! He loves to hoard stuffed animals and hide them in his crate. He doesn't typically chew on them, normally just cuddles with them. Baxter is amazing with his foster family. He is great with the children, other dogs and even cats!
Baxter loves car rides and meeting new people, HOWEVER Baxter does not like people wearing scrubs. He will indeed bite if approached by someone wearing scrubs. It is a complete fear response and not at all his fault. We are trying to work past this fear, but we will not put him in a home that can not help him thru this and possibly deal with this aggression for the rest of his life. We never want Baxter put in the situation where a bite is to occur and Baxter's life be put on the line. This is a serious issue that must be understood and addressed by both rescue and adopters.

Anyone interested in adopting Baxter please email us at adoptions@dfwgsr.com
We will by no surprise be very selective as to where Baxter goes and will require pre and post placement home visits.

Baxter's Story

Baxter was run over by a car and then abandoned at the animal shelter to be euthanized. DFW GSR was contacted and took him straight to our orthopedic vet. We found that he had no broken bones, however he did have severe nerve damage in his front left leg along with random lacerations.
The vet was hopeful that once the swelling went down that Baxter would regain use of his leg.

***UPDATE 02/10/14***
After weeks of rehabilitation and physical therapy we were sad to say that Baxter's leg was dying. Once he lost blood flow he started to chew on his foot. We were able to get him into Emergency Surgery to prevent severe infection. The wonderful vets at Alvarado Veterinary Clinic were able to move things around and get Baxter into surgery immediately.

***UPDATE 02/14/14***
Baxter is feeling better!! His incision looks great! We are having to change the bandage daily due to how much he hates it, but his incision is staying clean and looks to be healing really well.
Now we are struggling with him finally starting to feel better so he wants to play! However he can't be too active! So now he's whining to play instead of whining due to pain. We are thrilled!!

***UPDATE 02/23/14***
Baxter is doing wonderfully!!!! His incision is healing and his sutures come out this week. He doesn't even have to wear the bandage anymore. HE IS NOT IN PAIN ANYMORE!!! He even played fetch and jumped on the trampoline this afternoon!

***UPDATE 02/28/14***
Baxter got his stitches out today!!!!! We have come to the conclusion that Baxter indeed does not like people wearing scrubs. He fought them touching him the whole time. However foster mommy was there and soothed his fear and we all got thru it unscathed.
The vet says Baxter should be ready to be placed up for adoption in approximately two weeks!!

Baxter is ready to be placed up for adoption. We will by no surprise be very selective as to where Baxter goes and will require pre and post placement home visits.
