My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jack: 8 Years Old, Black Neutered Male Lab, 79 Pounds

It is sad that Jack needs a new home but things have changed for his family and he now has been shoved out the door, to the backyard. Jack has been with his owner since he was a puppy. He was purchased from a breeder in the central valley for hunting, but the owner never got around to really hunt Jack. Jack needs a new home because his owner just got married and his new wife has two little ones and Jack was removed from the home and put outside 24/7, into a side dog run. Jack did not like being removed from the pack and realized quickly that he was not going to be let back into the home so when he had the opportunity, he would run to the neighbors house and hang with them inside. The owners have two small children and they felt Jack was too much for them and with the wandering off they put an ad on craigslist - Dog needs a new home - free to anyone who will come and take him. Golden Gate Lab Rescue saw the add and decided Jack should come into our program and we would find him a new home where he could live out the rest of his life inside the home with an owner that would give him the care and attention he deserved.

The minute we met Jack we knew he would be a great candidate for our program and we know anyone that meets Jack will fall in love with this special boy right away. Jack is a very loving, sensitive, happy Lab that is very well trained. He knows sit, stay, down, heel, leave it, drop, come, off, speak, shake and you can place a cookie on his nose and he will leave it there until you say ok. Jack does wonderful off and on a leash. If he is off leash and you call him - he will come. He will walk in a heel position with a gentle leader and he loves to go for car rides and will sit and look out the window. Jack has been around kids and he can be around children of all ages but at times Jack can get excited and may turn around and knock a small child over. Jack is in great shape and would get out for a walk, swim or play a game of fetch each day. He loves to play fetch and of course he loves the water! He was raised with Bullmastiff and gets along with all dogs. If another dog try's to start anything with Jack he will just stand there or walk away. (He did once get into some growling with the Mastiff over some food but only one time.) He is wonderful with chickens and cats, he will show some interest in cats but he is not aggressive towards them. Jack does not try to jump fences, will not jump up on people, does not bark in the back yard, will bark sometimes when strangers are out front, does not have separation anxiety but he will howl at sirens. If you want to be Jack's favorite human all you need to do is bring out a frisbee - he will follow you anywhere for a frisbee. Jack has a very soft mouth and does not have any possessive issues.

I have done Lab Rescue for 16 years and certain dogs come into our program that reach out to you with not only their demeanor but also with their eyes and the way they hold their head. When you talk to Jack you know he is listening to what you are telling him and you know he has an answer for you. (No I am not a crazy dog person!) Jack is a very kind, sensitive dog that no matter what happens to him he just keeps his chin up and does not let it affect him. (If we could all learn this lesson from Jack.) I think Jack realizes what a great dog he is and he knew he deserved better than the side of the house. We got Jack into the vet and had his lumps tested - they came back as fatty tumors, we got his ear infection treated, he has some mild allergies around his eyes and we treated him for this, he is updated on his shots, he is heartworm negative, his senior blood panel came back very healthy, his urine culture was fine, he is neutered and he is microchipped. He does have a small mass by one of his eyes and the vet said if his one eye does not clear up then she would recommend having this removed as it may be irritating his eye. Jack is located in Petaluma.

If you have the time and room for this loveable, beautiful boy and would like him to be a part of your family, please contact Rescue Rep Liz at 415-613-6374.
(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
