My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Essie is a scruffy-coated terrier mix who makes the tousled look look *good.* Though we were told she is a Brussels Griffon, we believe she is a mix of some kind, possibly with Cairn. She has a mixture of wirey hair on her body but softer hair on her head. She's sweet and easygoing, and she thoroughly enjoys the company, attention, and affection of people. She did well meeting and hanging around other small dogs. She's fairly undemanding. Just let her be close, and she's happy as can be. In fact, "happy" describes Essie most of the time now that she's out of the pound. Essie was surrendered by her owner, and we couldn't figure out why (because she's such a nice little girl) until we saw her condition. She came to us dirty and matted, with dental disease, dirty ears, inflammation on her underside (likely from sitting in urine), a large cyst on her tail, and a few other minor issues. Clearly, she had been neglected.

Essie has now gotten all the medical attention she needed and is now on the mend after being bathed and brushed out (she still needs a real grooming), with freshly cleaned teeth, clean ears, inflamed skin resolving, and minus one tail. Unfortunately, we were not able to save her tail and it had to be amputated. But now she is good as new and ready to start her new life.

There is some discrepancy about Essie's age, ranging from 4 to 9 years, but we believe her to be middle-aged at about 7-8 years old. Essie's a small dog, but she's a bit portly right now at 14 1/2 lbs., which is nothing that a healthy diet and some walks around the neighborhood won't fix. Aside from that, Essie doesn't need much. Just a comfy lap and a family to call her own. She did well in her temporary foster home, appears housebroken and trustworthy in the home, sleeps through the night, and enjoys lots of cuddles.

Essie's adoption fee of $235 includes vet exam, heartworm test, distemper combination vaccination, bordetella vaccination, rabies vaccination, deworming, dental cleaning, microchip and spay.

You can meet Essie at Wilmette Pet Center (after April 1st), 625 Green Bay Road, anytime during store hours 7 days a week. (847-251-6750 www.wilmettepetcenter.com ). Although you may want to adopt her on the spot, please know that you will have to go through the application process first.
