My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

It’s often said that beauty is only skin deep. But true beauty lies deep within and is sometimes masked by outward appearances. Such is the case with Vida, a wonderful Malamute whose name means “Life”. While her outward beauty has been diminished somewhat by a skin condition, her inner beauty not only remains intact, it shines brightly. True to her name, Vida is full of life, and she sometimes runs around so excited and so happy to be alive that her foster family calls her Vida Loca!

Vida suffers from discoid lupus, a non-contagious skin condition that commonly causes lesions on the nose and around the eyes. While the condition can’t be cured, it can be managed with a good diet, nutritional supplements, and occasional medication. Perhaps the most important factor in managing the condition is the avoidance of sunlight. Prior to being rescued, Vida was forced to live outdoors and she suffered terribly in the harsh New Mexico sun. Now in a loving foster home, Vida has enjoyed the benefit of being kept mostly indoors during daylight hours and her condition has improved greatly.

Vida seems oblivious to her condition and is one of the happiest and most loving dogs imaginable. She always wants to be near her foster family and runs back inside to be with them after short trips outdoors. When the family is away from the home, she quietly stays indoors by herself. Vida is housetrained and loves going for rides in the car. She’s an energetic and playful girl who would likely enjoy having a male canine companion in her forever home, but she could also do well as an only dog if given all the love and attention she so strongly desires.

Vida’s skin condition will require ongoing management and Dr. Dee Blanco of Santa Fe has graciously offered to provide treatment of the condition on a pro bono basis now and after Vida is adopted. A good diet is also important in managing the condition and Sandra Bosben of Marty's Meals, also in Santa Fe, has generously offered to provide a highly nutritious and freshly prepared canine diet for Vida at greatly reduced rates.

Many people in the Santa Fe area have joined together to help Vida overcome her circumstances, and perhaps you’ve been touched by her story. If you’re that special, caring person who can see beyond appearances and open your heart to Vida, can give her the love and affection she so greatly deserves, and can provide a mostly indoor life for her, please consider making Vida a member of your family.
