My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This sweetheart is Tula and she is a 40 pound Hound (Beagle) mix. We feel she has some Pointer in her as well but she is a mix of many breeds. She is a unique and beautiful dog that is a great family dog and is kind and patient with children. She is a medium sized dog perfect for many homes. The vet who cares for her thinks she is somewhere between one and two years of age. She has a sleek, smooth coat and requires very little grooming. Tula came to us from a rural pound where she had been abandoned. We were drawn to her lovely nature and cute looks. Tula is looking for a caring forever home where she will never be abandoned again.

This is our first time fostering and Tula has made it such an enjoyable and easy experience. She was quite shy for the first few days but has now settled in and is so loving and sweet. Her time in the house is spent lounging, napping and playing with her human foster siblings. She loves chasing her toys if someone is willing to play or will lounge with a favorite toy in her bed. She is very calm and good-natured in the house and she doesn’t bark inside. Tula isn’t being fostered with other pets but she greets other dogs eagerly on our walks and tries to initiate play with them. We feel she would do well in a home with another compatible dog and if not, she should have the opportunity to socialize and play with other dogs. We also have exposed her to cats and she showed appropriate respect to the cat. She pretty much ignored it but when the cat hissed at her she backed up and walked away. So with some adjustment time she would probably do well with a cat. If you’re looking for a family dog, Tula is it! She is absolutely wonderful with our small children. She doesn’t mind the noise, activity level or excitement of very young kids. She is a dog that enjoys their cuddles and is patient with a toddlers clumsy attempts at pets. She is very gentle and has no protective instincts with her food or treats. We have a very petite 2 year old and Tula has never knocked her or even bumped her. We taught her to wait at the top landing of our stairs until our toddler makes it to the bottom to avoid unintentional accidents and we only had to ask her once. She is extremely smart!

We have also taught Tula to walk on a head halter training lead as we found she pulled when out for a walk. She took to this right away and is a pleasure to walk now. She doesn’t seem overly fond of passing bikes and will bark at them while on walks but that’s about it. Otherwise she is all about sniffs!! Her hound nose loves to soak up all the smells outside! When outside, she really comes out of her shell and is up for anything! She loves to run but needs a safe enclosed area because she is a hound and will follow her nose if let loose to run. She is also happy to walk as long as you’re willing. She would be the perfect dog to run or bike with as she is gentle but has energy to spare. If you need a running partner Tula is your girl! She is built to run and has a lean and athletic body. But don’t fear, that would be a bonus only. Tula is happy with long walks as well. She is young and fit though so she does require daily exercise to burn off outdoor energy. Running is the best way to accomplish this so she will either need to be with a jogger, someone who will bike or rollerblade with her, or has a fenced in yard and will play with her. A fenced in yard isn’t a necessity but we would prefer she go to a home with one and we think Tula would really enjoy the freedom to be off-leash and follow her nose within a safe space.

Tula is the most lovable dog you’ll ever meet! She is happiest when she’s by your side or napping nearby as you go about your day. She would do best in a home where she wouldn’t be left home alone for long periods of time as she isn’t fond of being crated. She will go into the crate if asked but definitely experiences some anxiety. She does much better home alone if she is not crated so her perfect family should be willing to explore options with regards to leaving her at home. We are looking for a home for Tula where someone is home mostly or where there is the option for Tula to go to work with her owner. Tula bonds very strongly with her family and wants to be with them as much as possible. She travels well in the care and will want to go on outings as well. Tula will not be happy with a family that works all day outside the home and where she’s alone. Tula will require an experienced dog owner as she needs consistency and a clear set of rules. She has had some housebreaking accidents in the home and we are learning that she needs supervision and consistency and this is where a fenced in yard will come in handy so she can be easily popped outside for a pee. She is a sensitive dog and takes time to fully settle in and we are finding she is improving greatly with time and routine. She is now telling us that she has to go out by going to the door. We are experimenting with what works best for her when we are out of the home and as every day goes by we are getting to know her better and what works for her.

It is hard for us to imagine a dog with a better personality! She is the perfect dog for someone with children or someone who simply wants a calm, mild mannered dog that can turn it on outside. She is quite playful and very athletic but is smart enough to save her energy for the great outdoors. Whoever adopts her and is willing to love her forever will be rewarded with a faithful and loving companion. Tula is a very devoted dog who bonds strongly to her family. She will be your next best friend and is looking for an active family or person who will be patient with her as she settles in and will train her well and show her what’s expected. She is a real pleaser and wants her people to be happy with her. She is a dog who will snuggle with you during down times but is up for whatever adventures you want to go on as well. She will be your next best friend!
