My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 4-29-14; unavailable. Original bio below:

Nikki is a 4 year old, 11 lb pure-bred Silky Terrier female. She is overweight - typical for kibble fed dogs as it's high in carbohydrates. Nikki will be around 8 lbs at a normal, healthy weight. She's 100% potty trained to go outdoors and even lets you know she needs outside to potty when you ask her. She's just been spayed, microchipped, had her vet exam, bloodwork, and a dental by our vet. She's also fully vaccinated. Nikki would be best as an only dog as she is dominant with others. She knows how to walk in a harness and leash, and loves going for walks. She's also crate trained and eats her meals and sleeps in a wire crate. Nikki knows several commands, including do you want to go outside and do you want to go for a walk. She's affectionate to her people and loves to be with you. Nikki needs an all adult home or an adult home with older children only. She doesn't like small/young children and lots of activity/noise. She is a dominant dog & would be best as the only dog in the home.

Although a toy in size, the Silky Terrier has a true terrier personality - he is of sufficient substance to be able to hunt and kill domestic rodents. The general public occasionally confuses this breed with the Yorkie, but in reality, the Silky is larger and more closely related to the Australian Terrier. A friendly, joyful temperament and the lovely blue and tan coat make Silkies an ideal companion. This loving, little terrier is very intelligent, courageous and alert. Affectionate, spunky, cheerful and sociable, it likes to be close to its master. It's full of energy and needs a good amount of exercise in order to be calm; a 30-40 minute daily walk is good. Curious and keen, active, smart and quick. Despite its size, this docile dog makes a good watchdog. This is a sturdy breed that adjusts well to traveling. It is not generally trustworthy with other non-canine pets such as rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs. Socialize well, including with cats, so it does not chase them. Silkies need strong owners who won't fail to give the discipline and structure all dogs instinctually need. Training these dogs is very straightforward because it's very eager to learn. Do not allow this little dog to develop Small Dog Syndrome, human induced behaviors where the dog believes he is pack leader to humans. When a Silky believes it is the boss, its temperament changes, as it tries to control everyone and everything around it.
