My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Neeki: 4 1/2 Year Old Black Lab Spayed Female 72 Pounds AKC

Sometimes life is not fair but you got to roll along and Neeki does this while always wagging her tail and always with a positive attitude! Lab Rescue got a call from Neeki's owner asking us to please save Neeki from death row! They felt they had no other choice but to take her to the Ft. Bragg shelter as they said she was allergic to their area and they felt if they took her to a shelter away from Ukiah then Neeki's allergies would heal up and go away! The Ukiah shelter and the Ft. Bragg shelter told the owners that Neeki did not have a chance to be adopted but they said they could not see her scratch any longer. Neeki was at the shelter for a few months and the shelter called the owners to let them know she was due to be put down. Neeki's owner called a few places to see if anyone would rescue her. Lab Rescue got the call and from what was described over the phone about Neeki the rescue rep knew she would be good for their rescue program. From the first time the adoption rep with Lab Rescue met Neeki, she knew she needed to have another chance as she was a special girl and she had too much life to live and too many hugs and kisses to give!

This is Neeki's story:
Neeki was purchased from a breeder in the Mendocino area. Neeki's breeding lines come from champion lines and her temperament is very sound. If it were not for her allergies Neeki would make a wonderful Guide Dog! (Once her allergies are healed up she would make a wonderful therapy dog.) Neeki has been with her family since she was 8 weeks of age. She has been well socialized, she loves all dogs, people, animals - she is a lover and night a fighter! Neeki was kept outside mostly as her family felt it was easier on her allergies and her family did not like that she had a bit of an odor to her at times. (The odor was from her allergies but with medicated shampoo she has a good smell to her!) She did not have allergies at first but around the age of one her family noticed she was itching. They did take her into the vet and have tried a variety of things but the right treatment has not been found for her yet. (Lab rescue took her into their vet and has started her on some medication. We ran a few tests on her to try and rule out a few things. Neeki is definitely an allergy dog but she is a dog that should not be put down due to her allergies!)

Neeki knows many commands and she will do what you ask of her. She knows sit, down, stay, walks well on a correction collar, loves to ride in the car, can be with any dog or cat and any human small or large! She loves the car and will sit looking out the window or she will curl up and take a nap! She sleeps through the night on her dog bed and she is housetrained. She is a lady when she takes treats from your hand and of course has no issues with her food bowl or toys. When the foster mom's dog growls at her to tell her to get away - Neeki will walk away with a wag of her tail. She is a dog that can be walked off leash and will stay close to your side but if she does get ahead she will come right away when called. She gets to go to the beach and swim with her foster mom and she looks up and smiles at her to let say thank you for springing me from the shelter! She goes to work with the foster mom and is fine being in the Big city and is fine with all of the office staff. She is very content sleeping on her bed at the foster mom's office but you can tell Neeki is a bit bored with this office job! Neeki is in great shape other than trying to deal with her allergies. If you are looking for a wonderful companion that will give you 150% Neeki is your girl. She is only 4 1/2 years old but she has a very calm, easy temperament and is one of these special dogs that only come around every so often! Neeki is located in Novato.

If you have the time for this special girl and want her to be a part of your family, please contact Rescue Rep Liz at 415-613-6374.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
