My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Brita is an amazing girl! She was rescued from a field as a stray by a southern animal control and when we spotted her in a high kill shelter on death row we were told she was pregnant. She came to us extremely ill with an upper respiratory infection and gave birth to babies who were so big she had to have an emergency c-section to deliver them! All her babies survived and throughout her recovery and raising of her children, Brita was an absolute trooper! Just a baby herself at the time, Brita is now estimated to be about 16 months old (vets guessed she was about a year old at the time her babies were born in January, 2014). Brita's babies are all weaned now and she is truly coming into her own.

Brita is a wonderful family member and has lived in a foster home with children and other dogs since her rescue in January. She is loyal and, true to terrier form, she LOVES human attention! She also LOVES to play with the other dogs in her foster home. Brita is believed to be a terrier mix (possibly Jack Russell mixed with some Schnauzer), but it's really anyone's guess as to her parentage. She is a very happy girl now that she is fully healthy and has completely healed from birthing and raising such enormous babies! Brita loves to play, has very good energy and is extremely smart and trainable. She loves to sleep with her human family at night (in their bed!).

Brita is fully housebroken, knows basic commands including coming to her name being called. She would probably excel as an agility dog as she loves to learn new things and please her humans. Brita gets along with the 8 other dogs in her foster home. Brita has not gotten along well with other dogs when her puppies are around, but when they are not, she is curious and then loves to play with anyone who will play with her! She adores her toys and is still finishing up her own puppyhood so she needs plenty of things to do to keep her brain engaged.

Brita would do quite well in a family where she can be given lots of attention and where she is treated like a family member and included in family outings, bedtime, and other family events. Brita will not do well being relegated to certain rooms of the house or being excluded from the family on a regular basis. She is looking for a happy, active person or family for her forever home.

Brita weighs about 34 pounds and is full grown. She has been spayed and microchipped, is up to date on all vaccines, is heartworm negative, and is on flea/tick and heartworm prevention every month, which we require she remain on. Brita has no residual health issues from when she arrived and has been given a clean bill of health by our vets.

Interested adopters must know this is one special lady, and whoever adopts her must be willing to maintain contact with our rescue to send updates, pictures, and emails, because all of us have become quite attached to her. She would have been a foster failure several times over already except we are all already full! Brita needs and deserves a forever home where she will never again know hunger, abandonment, neglect, or any kind of abuse, and where she is treated as a family member. Potential adopters will be screened carefully for these qualities.

Interested adopters please email MJsAnimalSanctuary@gmail.com to request an adoption application. Adopters subject to reference check, vet reference, home visit, and meet and greet. Adoption fee applies.
