My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Benny is a young boy with a very unusual coat. He is approximately a year old but is well behaved in the home, affectionate and laid back indoors. He would love to have a large back yard to run in or someone that would ensure he gets enough exercise to make him a happy, healthy companion. He is great with everyone but would not do well with cats as he would want to chase them. He currently weighs 52 lbs.

Here is what Benny's foster family had to say:

Benny has the most unusual markings of any dog we've had - Black ears, and a black patch on his back has everyone swooning over this dog. Everywhere we go we constantly get compliments about how beautiful he his. Although he has excellent house manners (zero accidents) He is VERY high energy. We take him for 5 (FIVE) 20 minute walks a day and it is not adequate. This dog needs to run free in order to relieve his pent up energy. Thankfully, he doesn't suffer from bad anxiety - We've been able to leave him un-crated and the worst he's done when we've left is gotten into his treats...

Although his coat looks wiry, its pretty soft and he doesn't shed as much as I thought he would. Low-Moderate. One brushing a week would keep this down significantly. Indoors he is very social with all humans and dogs. Outdoors, he's constantly on the prowl for rodents to point out and chase - So he tends to ignore most humans and dogs outdoors while on the hunt. This dog has no fear of people - zero aggression and I feel totally safe with him with anyone (respectful kids, adults etc.) He loves to play and is affectionate with everyone. Benny does appear to have a prey drive (at least he likes to chase!) and I would not recommend him to a home with cats.

Benny is afraid of nothing. Fireworks don't wake him up, thunderstorms put him to sleep. He loves his rope toys. He also loves his humans. If you're lying on the couch/bed, he'll come up and put his head on your chest, make a gentle prod with his nose and demand affection from you. Its really cute and tugs at the heart strings. He very rarely barks. He cries for a minute or two when someone leaves the house, but overall is a quiet dog.

Benny will take the opportunity to counter surf if you give it to him easily - Stuff left on the edges, etc. Since we've started putting stuff further in, we've not had any issues with it since. He definitely knows what is right and what is wrong, and with stern, consistent correction, he quickly learns what is off limits. For example, we took him to my parents place and within an hour he knew (and obeyed) the fact that he wasn't allowed upstairs. He knows Sit, Stay, Shake Paw, Heel, "ah ah" (stop that), and is starting to get his recall in ideal situations (indoors, nothing distracting him, etc). He is fully house trained. We crated him for the first 2 days, and after that he proved he was ok without it. He's never had an accident or lifted his leg indoors. A GREAT house dog. He does bark when left in his crate though - He really hates that crate so we took the leap of faith and stopped crating him. Thankfully he is calm once out of the cage and left alone. So low anxiety, and an excellent house guest.

Benny is a dream on a leash - Until he sees a rodent/bunny/squirrel. At that point, he can't believe that you don't want to go with him and hunt that critter. He will pull incessantly until you are well out of range. However, when no rodents are around, he is a dream - He understands "heel" and insists on walking on your left side. If you stop walking he knows to stop and sit beside you without question. Hes a smart dog and will need further training to ignore critters on his walk.

Benny is a sweetheart of a dog that doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He has a slightly dominant mindset and will need an experienced owner to keep him in check. He is very athletic and will need an active family to keep his energy levels in check. I am almost certain he is a German short-haired pointer (or at least the majority of his genes are) and he fits all of the description perfectly. Anyone who looks over the breed traits and can understand what the dogs needs are will be an excellent home for Benny.

An active family of experienced dog owners will allow Benny to grow into a relaxed, loving, indoor companion. This dog thrives on attention and affection, and has enough energy to keep the whole family in shape. He has been a joy to have in our home, and is very unobtrusive/non-destructive. Benny will be happiest when he's by your side, keeping tabs on everyone in the house. He does his rounds around the house to ensure that everyone can have an equal opportunity to pet him, although quickly falls asleep when left alone. He's the perfect, solid, hearty dog for anyone who wants a "real dog" instead of a "toy" dog.

We will miss him, he really weasels his way into the hearts of anyone who meets him!

If you think Benny would be a good fit for your situation, please submit an application for consideration.
