My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Butters as he is affectionately called by his foster family is the perfect family pet. He loves everyone including other dogs and cats and people of all ages. He even handles walking beside a stroller like a champ. He is affectionate, friendly, and an all around "man's best friend". Butterscotch is approximately 5 - 6 years old and currently weighs 60 lbs.

Here is what his foster family had to say:

Butterscotch loves to be loved, and gives it back ten-fold with cuddles and kisses. He has a wonderful way of showing how much he appreciates being a part of the family. He is such a sweet boy with a rough past. He truly needs and deserves a forever family that will be patient, kind and always loving.

He's a very healthy boy, with a good appetite. He's a short and stocky build, so he does need regular daily walks and play time to help keep his weight healthy. Although a good 30min walk can tucker him out, being a bit older, Butterscotch still has a moderate to high energy level. He'll be sure to kindly remind you when it's time for his walks or if he doesn't want to come inside just yet. He loves being outside. There hasn't been much to cleanup in the way of shedding hair, even though it's Spring and shedding time.

Butterscotch gets along with everyone. He adores kids and loves when they come up to pet him, sitting nicely basking in the affection, giving the occasional kiss. I've only ever heard him growl one time, and that was just to let the puppy from next door know he didn't want to be "checked out" anymore. Completely normal. I don't think Butterscotch has a mean bone in his body. He meets everyone the same way, with a wagging tail and a "please pet me" look. He loves to cuddle. He will lay out, with his paw over you on the couch. Just loving to be next to you.

Aside from a curious sniff here and there, he doesn't pay much attention to cats. We've met quite a few different dogs, big and small, on our walks and he's never had any issues saying hi. He does get excited when he sees a squirrel on walks, but is such a good boy when told to settle-down.

He's getting much better at going into his crate when we leave for the day but will cry/whine/bark for a little bit once the door closes. He is able to stay out of his crate at night, sleeping on a big comfy couch with no destructive behaviour whatsoever. However, there was an instance when we did a trial run during the work-day and he chewed some blinds to be able to see out the window after we'd left. I believe with patience, time and confidence with his forever family Butterscotch will easily get over this fear of being left and can say bye to the crate.

He loves his morning and after supper walks. He will remind you when it's time by sitting at the door with big puppy eyes looking at his leash. Changing up the routes for new sights and smells. He does great in public places for walks, and enjoys walking along the trails for quite the distance. He does great on the leash, even beside a stroller.

Butterscotch enjoys a good bone but won't chew furniture, toys, etc. He listens very well, and has only stolen food once (our fault for leaving it unattended) but hasn't had any incidences since being told "no" that one time. He knows his doggy-basics and listens very well: come, sit, stay, drop it, down, off. He is great about doing business outside. He'll signal you when he needs to go out by pacing or sitting in front of the door and giving a little whine. He's perfect on the leash. He will tug a bit if you try to go inside and he's not ready to finish his walk yet but will listen when told. He enjoys car rides, with no accidents. Will sit and stay in the back when told. The longest car ride he's had was about an hour and did wonderful the whole way.

Butterscotch is the dog you think of when you hear "man's best friend". He will be such a wonderful addition to any family. He would do well in any home as long as he has his daily walks, especially in a town house or apartment situation. He is able to handle a full-time working schedule (8 hours a day by himself) but I believe would be much happier if he had someone home more often than not. He's a companion dog, and loves company.

If you would like to make Butterscotch part of your family, please submit an application for consideration.
