This little 11 lb. cutie is Doodles and we think he’s a bichon-frise or a bichon-poo. Oh my – he came to us so very matted as you can see by his ‘before’ photo, so we gave him a buzz cut to start all over and see who was underneath, and Voila!, this little nugget appeared! The vet estimates his age to be about 7 years old, but don’t let that deter you…he can run circles around his foster home’s younger dog and has plenty of energy to play – which he LOVES to do – with other dogs, with toys or with a human. You can get an idea of his "joie de vivre" here in his YouTube video.
Okay – so you see the brown tear stains around his eyes. Yuck. This often happens to little white dogs. When their eyes tear, the consistent dampness under and around the eyes creates the perfect environment for red yeast and bacteria to grow, causing the stains. We’re pretty sure that Doodles was never groomed properly given the condition he came to us in. The foster home was hoping for a quick fix so we could get some better photos, but there isn’t one. Good nutrition and regular cleaning of the eyes should take care of this matter. And once the hair around his eyes gets a little longer, the dark stained hair can be clipped off. As long has he has a caring human to keep the area clean (got cotton balls?), this issue should improve greatly. Doodles is too nice and fun a little dog to let that stop you from considering him. And he doesn’t shed!
So what makes him a nice, fun dog? Well, let us count the ways: He can balance on his hind legs - so cute! He’s very loving and affectionate and is quite happy curled up in your lap, but isn’t demanding about it. He’s friendly and enjoys playing with other dogs, and will also keep himself occupied by playing with a toy. Re: cats, had the cat in his foster home whacked him on the noggin on day 1, he would have been put in his place. But she didn’t, and now, on day 5 at the time of this writing, the novelty for him is wearing off and all can be in the same room peacefully. He walks wonderfully on leash and generally lifts his leg within a minute of being outside. (He had a few accidents in the house but these accidents have taught his foster home his best going out schedule and all looks good.) We haven't had him around very young children, but he should do well with older, gentle ones who understand how to treat a small dog.
Doodles is being crated at night and is fine with that. His foster home doesn’t want him to get too comfortable by allowing him to sleep in bed but she sees no reason why his new owner shouldn't at least allow him to sleep in the bedroom. The only negative about D is that, like some other small dogs, he has to warm up to people he doesn’t know. So have a tasty treat ready to give a stranger who could then give it to doggy and bingo, all is good. Oh, and since his foster mom thinks Doodles is a silly name, she’s been calling him something else which he is already responding to. When you call to inquire about him, we’ll reveal that to you :)
Doodles's adoption fee of $250 includes: exam, heart worm test (neg), distemper, bordetella and rabies vaccinations, routine deworming, flea control, grooming, microchip and neuter.
