My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gigi is a sweet, quiet girl who loves to be held and sleep in bed with you. She is about 4 years old, and is a petite 11 pounds. Gigi loves attention and will actively play for a few minutes before quieting down again. One of her favorite pass times is to watch out the window of her foster family’s sunroom and lay in the sun. She is a laid back little girl who just loves having her family around her. She will easily become attached and form a quick bond with someone who simply pays attention to her and spends time with her. Gigi is a smart girl and is housetrained and has learned “sit”, “stay”, and “come”. She is a very good walker who has just about mastered the heel command. Even though she enjoys daily walks, she prefers short walks, so about a block and back is enough for her.

When Gigi came to Shih Tzu Rescue she had a severe case of “dry eye” which had not been treated by her previous owner. Her eyes were no longer producing any tears at all. Her eyes were very dry and painful, and she had lost most of her sight. The veterinary ophthalmologist prescribed medicated drops (Tacrolimus) which were applied three times a day. An over-the-counter ointment was also used twice a day. After more than a month of treatment, her follow-up appointment was very encouraging. She is now making some tears and has regained about 50% of her sight, so she can see large objects as well as distinguish between movements. She now notices squirrels and birds at the feeder while looking out the window. With ongoing treatment, the ophthalmologist is optimistic that she will continue to make more tears and regain almost all of her sight by the end of the year. If this occurs, the eye drops could then be reduced to 2-3 times per day. However, Gigi will need the prescription eye drops and follow up appointments with the eye specialist for the rest of her life. Her new forever home will have to make that commitment to her eye care and have the ability to apply drops 3 times a day forever. Due to her vision issues, Gigi does get startled from loud noises or voices, so she would do best in a calm, quiet home without small children. Her ideal home would be one where her new parent(s) are home for much of the day.

Other than her eye problem, Gigi is in excellent physical condition, has been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $320.00 plus sales tax. Her foster parents would like her to be adopted within a reasonable distance of the Twin Cities.
