My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This adorable big boy is Sarge and he is a 10mth old German Shepherd with a comical appearance of one ear up and one ear always down. He is a total love of a dog and his goofy appearance absolutely suits his sweet and puppyish temperament. Sarge was an unclaimed stray at a rural pound . We couldn’t resist his happy face and when we took him outside we knew that he was the one for us. Sarge lacks some confidence and maturity so we gave him a confident name to aspire to. Sarge has joined our family of confident dogs and he has done amazingly well and is thriving. He is still a mild natured, gentle dog, but he no longer glues himself to your side when out for a walk which makes walking him a lot nicer.

Sarge is a big boy. He is 90lbs right now and still has filling out to do. He will need a family that has the space for such a large dog and the resources to care for a big dog properly. Sarge has a moderate energy level and does not need a lot of high energy exercise to be happy. A play session in the yard or a decent walk tires him out. He does quite well with other dogs and we are looking for a home for him that has another good natured, confident dog that Sarge can mentor from. He has done so well following along with our dogs that we want him to be able to continue learning from a well behaved dog in his forever home. Sarge enjoys playing with other dogs and is a submissive dog so he is no threat to others despite his size. Sarge is also good with the cats in his foster home and pretty much ignores them. Sarge would also be a good dog for a family with children as long as the children are gentle and have a proper respect for a dog. Sarge is a very gentle dog and rough handling will be extremely detrimental to him. He also will not like a loud and busy home so a home with kids will be considered depending on the home environment. Sarge shows no aggression over his food bowl or toys and is a huge sucky who loves cuddles and pets. If he could fit in your lap he would want to be there. Sarge is a total doll of a dog and is so affectionate.

Sarge has a very gentle nature and needs to go to a family that understands that he needs to be handled softly. Verbal correction is all that is required when needed. He will not do well in a home with a stern leader or someone overly corrective. That does not mean that we let him get away with things. He has rules here and is expected to follow them and he catches on fast and trains well. He is very food motivated so we have been using this as a training aid and he is very smart and eager to please. We will be expecting his adoptive family to continue his training and he needs to attend dog school for the learning and socialization He is good on leash and is learning to walk at our side without tripping us! He also took to crate training very easily and goes in now willingly and is quiet and restful in his crate. He is also house trained and knows to do his business outside. He has been a very easy dog to foster and we are very attached to this dog. I can’t stress enough how sweet this dog is, he is so puppy like in his manners. He is just a real cuddler and he tries so hard to make sure you are pleased with him. You can see how absolutely crest fallen he is when you have to correct him for something. It’s like his heart breaks and you have to give him a hug and remind him that you love him still.

Sarge is great in the car and loves to travel. He hops right in and is quiet and calm for the ride. We have also found out that he LOVES water and would love a family with a cottage or a pool or access to swimming. We have a kiddie pool in the yard for the dogs and he plays in it and lies in it every chance he gets. He has to be reminded that he can’t play in his water bowl though. We even found him running through the sprinkler we had going to water the garden. It was almost a shame to have to call him away from it as he was having such a good time, but he was trampling the growing veggies!

Sarge will be a terrific dog for someone willing to put the time in to train him well and who has the resources to care for a big dog. He will be the most loyal dog to the people he loves. He bonds very strongly to the people who care for him and he loves his family very much. How anyone could have abandoned this amazing boy astounds us. It’s for the best though as Sarge needs to be in a family where he will be greatly loved and cared for forever. He needs a lifelong commitment from his next family and he will give the same back in return. Sarge is loving and friendly and so gentle. His size alone will be all he needs to ward off strangers. He is calm and quiet in the home and has exercise requirements that are easy to meet. He is an easy dog to live with; he asks so little and gives so much. This will be some lucky family’s best dog ever. We just know it!

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and microchipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.
