Here's what the humans have to say about me:
9/8/2014 Update: Happy news for Winston! He is now heartworm free and the surgery to remove his damaged eye went very well. Winston was neutered at the same time. He is recovered and ready for adoption. Winston is a loving boy who is looking for his forever home.
Winston is a large, handsome, 5-year old (estimated), male GSD. He came into our program from another rescue that thought he was deserving of being rescued and not be put to sleep with his excellent temperament. Since this was a rescue saving a different breed of dog and not knowing German Shepherds, they contacted us to see if we would take him into our program.
He did not have a great start in life as he has had some sort of trauma where he lost half of one ear and the sight of one eye. Also, he was tested for heartworm and is positive having them. He is now going through treatment to kill the heartworms, which is an expensive (est. over $1,700), long, and painful process to go through. His activity is also very limited as he continues to go through the treatment. For more information on the treatment plan he is currently undergoing, visit the American Heartworm Society’s web site (http://www.heartwormsociety.org/pdf/Canine-Guidelines-Summary.pdf).
Winston is being fostered in a home with a female GSD, one human adult, and two male children. He is a very energetic dog that loves to run, fetch and play, but is now unable to do those things until his heartworm treatment ends. Winston loves to be by your side, will come lay at your feet and wants to be with you at all times. He is very social, loves people and is very affectionate. Based on what we have seen with Winston, we believe that he is much younger than the age that was given to us. He still acts like an adolescent Shepherd and seems to still be growing and learning as a young dog would. With all that Winston has gone and is going through, this pup still has an excellent temperament and is always happy! You wouldn’t even know that he has no eye sight in the bad eye. Nothing fazes this boy.
We are hoping that at the end of July when Winston is done with his treatment and retested for heartworm, he will be ready to go to an adoptive home. Winston will make a great family dog—a home with children with or without another dog. Since he is currently on limited activity, the foster home has been unable to work on his obedience training. If you are committed to going to dog training and can handle a large, active pup, this is the dog for you!
