This dog is being fostered in Dallas, Texas and must be adopted within the North Texas or Oklahoma City area.

Meet one of our super special Chihuahuas - Katniss.
Katniss came from Garland Animal Shelter and was labeled as "Rescue Only" because she had sustained some type of brain trauma from either disease or physical abuse (we are not sure which). Originally, her balance was off. She was unable to walk normally and she looked like she was on a drunken
binge when she tried to walk. When she was picked up to be held, all her legs would sprawl outward like she was grasping for any solid surface she could find. Her depth perception was off as she could not determine even the smallest step and would tumble over. Everything else about her seemed to be normal.
She has been recovering in her foster home since the end of March, has made tremendous progress and is now ready for adoption. She now has a high step with her front legs that resembles what a Tennessee Walking Horse does and she leaps through the yard like an antelope. All of which is actually very cute and just adds to her already adorable personality.
Katniss is a strong little girl having survived the trials of her past life, hence the name from The Hunger Games. She loves her foster mom and enjoys their couch time. She has taken up the role of "couch police" letting the other chi's know that they must go thru her to also come on board. The funny thing is, it is all show and no real punishment is ever doled out. She can be the same way with new people or new dogs coming into the house. It's quite comical. She just has to let them know that she would like to be boss, but it's all "show". She has a very loving heart and personality.
Katniss is still very puppy-like and loves to play with the other playful dogs. She is also very tolerant of the big dog puppy (35 pounds!) who seems to think that she loves him slobbering all over her. But they play together a lot so all must be well. She will come and use her foster mom's legs as protection when playtime gets to be too much.
Katniss is housebroken and will use the doggie door to come in. She hasn't quite figured out she can use the doggie door to also go out, so we are working on teaching her that! Her foster mom goes outside with her first thing in the morning and as soon as she does her business she comes straight over for her morning attention to be held and kissed on. Katniss is not a big kisser unless we are on the couch watching TV and then she will kiss her human on the face. But she is easily corrected if her humans don't like kisses.
Katniss will need someone who is aware of, but not fearful of, her specialness. She absolutely can not go to a home with stairs or a pool that is not completely fenced in. She travels great in the car in a crate. She is not much of a barker. And her foster mom thinks the world of her.
Katniss is spayed, micro chipped, up-to-date on shots, HW negative and on heartworm prevention. She is ready to join a loving family - could that family be yours?
This dog is a CRT rescue. Reference checks, adoption contract and $200 adoption fee is required.
