My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This cutie is Becky and she is a 3mth old German Shepherd X. We believe she has some Doberman in her as she has a sleek coat and the traditional Doberman colour points and head shape. But she is very much German Shepherd in her nature and activity level and is a fantastic little pup that with proper training and socialization will continue on her path to be a wonderful family dog. Becky was found as a stray and was not claimed. Sadly, many puppies end up discarded once people realize how much work is involved in a pup. They are certainly cute and loveable but puppies need families with the time and ability to train them properly and care for them and Becky is no exception. She is a fast learner though and impresses us every day with her smarts and great nature. Becky is a very special puppy and is sure to be exactly what a committed family is looking for.

Becky is being crate trained in her foster home and she responds well to that. She sleeps the night through in her crate, waking around 6:30-7am. She is doing very well with her house training and will “go” every time you take her out. She needs to be constantly supervised in the house, as does every pup, to make sure that the cues are caught that she needs to go out. We have gotten into the habit of taking her out every time she comes out of her crate, after eating, playing and resting, and basically whenever we feel that she hasn’t been out in a bit. She is praised every time she goes the bathroom outside and she loves to receive this praise. She is a real pleaser and tries her best to make her people happy. With a consistent schedule and with proper supervision she will be fully house trained in no time.

Becky is being fostered with other dogs and with cats. She LOVES the other dogs and has a blast running around the yard and playing with them. She is fearless and doesn’t care that some of them are considerably bigger than her. Becky would love a home with another fun and playful dog, but if she is to be the only dog then she will need to have some good natured, well behaved dog friends to keep up her socialization and to give her an outlet for doggie play. Becky is also good with the cats and would be fine to go to a home with a cat that will tolerate dogs. The cats in her foster home do not react to Becky so she finds them boring and pretty much ignores them. But if the cat were to react and run we know she would love to chase. She isn’t being fostered with children but we have exposed her to many children and she is very well behaved with them. We even had her out and about at a family get together and she did amazingly well, socializing nicely with people of all ages and loving all the attention she was given. Becky is not possessive over her toys or food and we continue to work this so that she doesn’t develop any possessiveness. Children were able to pet her while she chewed a toy under supervision and she couldn’t have cared less and accepted all the pets as she chewed away. She is also being handled regularly in her foster home so that she accepts handling and allows her feet, ears and mouth to be manipulated. Her new family will need to continue all of these preventative measures to make sure that when she is grown she hasn’t developed any issues regarding possessiveness or handling. The more you can do with a pup while they are young benefits them greatly when they are older!

Becky loves going for walks and is now accepting of a leash and has learned that the leash means fun times ahead. We are now starting to teach her to walk on our left side and not to pull out ahead. She also now knows “sit” and we are working on “down”. We are looking for a family that will take Becky to obedience school so that she can be the best dog possible and the whole family can learn together how to teach her to be that dog. She is a sponge for knowledge at this age so teaching her properly now will have a huge effect on her. Her family needs to be confident leaders for her as she is a confident pup. She is very food motivated so that makes positive reinforcement training very successful with her.

Becky will be a large sized dog when fully grown. Her family will need to be active as she will be a dog that requires daily exercise and play. She will even be a suitable running partner when grown should that be something you are looking for. Becky is an outgoing pup and will want to go on adventures with her family and be involved in family outings. She would benefit from a house with a fenced back yard to run and play in. We have found that she likes water and will wander into puddles and tries to play in her water bowl. She would love cottage outings where she can get in to the water and learn to swim. She is such a fun and friendly puppy, she is sure to make a family very happy. Becky is affectionate and sweet and is a very good pup. If you are looking for a large dog but have the time and patience and ability to raise up a puppy then look no further because this might just be the dog for you!!
