My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, Hello, Hello! Let me introduce myself - I am Katherine but my friends call me Miss Kitty. I make friends easily because I am a very grateful 5 year old Yorkshire Terrier mix. Unlike most Rover Rescue dogs who come from Southern Indiana, I am from Kankakee County right here in Illinois. Animal control had various reports of my sightings and I was not an easy girl to catch. Once I was caught by animal control, it was discovered beneath my flea-infested body was a sweet girl with a heart of gold. A plea was put out to Rover Rescue and a transport was arranged to help me begin my new life.

I arrived at my foster home and met dogs of all sizes and ages. I am a very good natured girl and showed no signs of confrontation. I am a true terrier and my nose was to the ground checking out all the smells in my foster family's backyard. I've been around other dominant females and I prefer to walk away because I am a true lady. When the larger dogs are romping and playing, I enjoy watching from the sidelines. My breed is prone to having a luxating patella and my foster mom has mentioned that I have it. My kneecap slips out of place and after running around for a bit, one will see me lift and carry my leg. Rarely do small dogs like me have anything done about it. It doesn't keep me from running to my favorite people when I see them!

Speaking of people, there are almost as many people as there are dogs here in my foster home. Animal control had assessed me in the shelter and my foster mom put me through another series of temperament tests once I arrived. I don't care about toys and showed no guarding behaviors with food. I take treats nicely and can easily be shooed away from the kitchen table during dinner. My foster mom thinks my previous owner fed me people food because I sure act like I should get something from the people table too. My foster mom makes me sit on a carpet away from the table and I complied after I was taught. I am smart and really want to please people like a true Yorkie.

I live with 5 children although Rover Rescue policy does prohibit me from being adopted into a family with children less than the age of 5 years old. Although I am no threat to them, it would be too tempting for a small child to want to carry me and injure me. I did allow the oldest girls in the home to give me a spa treatment. I heard lots of "ewww"s as they lathered my patchy fur with conditioning soap. My skin was in poor shape from the fleas I had before I arrived at animal control and I looked like I was shedding my outer layer. After 4 baths, all the dirt and grossness was removed and I had a follow-up conditioning treatment to further aid my skin and coat. I do have hair loss on my face, ears, and all over my body, but the hair I do have is clean and flea-free. I am on a grain-free dog food to further enhance my coat. Give me a few weeks and I will look as spectacular as I feel!

I have been given my yearly vaccinations including bordetella and rabies. I am heartworm negative and on a monthly heartworm preventative as well as a monthly flea preventative. I kept my kennel clean while at animal control and have had no accidents in my foster home so my foster mom feels I am potty trained. I will go into a crate but I love being part of a family again so I will protest a few barks. I quiet down when I am told to and remain quiet until my people return home. I sleep through the night currently in a crate but my foster mom says I will soon earn the privilege of sleeping loose at night since I am non-destructive. I also live with a cat and have no issues with him either. In fact, I will share a dog bed with him with no problems at all!

I am available for adoption and my fee is $200. This fee includes a free-microchipping at a Rover Rescue vet within 30 days of my adoption. I am being fostered in the Aurora area and am looking for my fur-ever home. If you think I would do well in your home, please call my foster mom Mary at 815-278-2102 for a phone interview. She will have some questions for you as well as answer any questions you may have about me!
