Ginger is a one-and-a-half- year-old, 27 lb., Bassett Hound/Beagle mix who was rescued from the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter on her last day. She is a loving and affectionate dog, however she is also fun and even goofy at times. She is playful, active, and curious too but can also totally chill out. She is energetic when playing with other dogs. She loves to hang out with you, go on car rides with you where she sits quietly looking out the window, hang out on a pet bed while you work on your computer, or even sleep in your bed with you; at the same time, she has a strong penchant to play with other dogs because it is her life’s joy to play with and interact with other friendly dogs who also wish to play and celebrate life in the way that she does. Her play style is to run very fast and have all of the other dogs chase her, or outright wrestle. She is fine with both bigger and smaller dogs.

At first, Ginger is a little shy of new surroundings, new people, and new dogs. However, after a few hours or maybe a day, she will make friends easily and start to play. One of her favorite things is to literally run/romp around and frolic in the grass. She also likes to pick up toys, occasionally hold them in her mouth, and will play with them for a bit on her own.

Ginger’ two front paws stand outward in typically Bassett form. She also has scars on her face above her nose and around her jaw towards her neck. The scars on her nose can be seen in photos; the scars by her jawline cannot be seen unless you lift her jaw upwards towards you to take a look. We do not know what happened to Ginger; we can only surmise that possibly, she was attacked by another dog when she was a young puppy, or got caught up on something sharp. Regardless of what happened, this does affect her outgoing and fun-loving personality or her eagerness and enthusiasm to “pack” with other dogs. We hope for a loving person or persons who can overlook a small physical flaw.

Ginger does not appear to be a barker other than an occasional alert. She shows no signs of separation anxiety. She is potty-trained (however, potty reinforcement is needed in any new environment). She responds well to verbal correction. She is crate-trained, and can sleep in a wire crate at night but prefers to sleep with the other dogs in the house or with people. She sleeps all night long without any whining or barking. She walks well on the leash using a training collar but does tend to wander. If you want her to walk next to you, you will need to do a bit of training. She is a sensitive dog and completely understands where you are displeased with something that she is doing and immediately attempts to adjust herself.

Ginger lives in a foster home with three other female dogs. She has also lived with multiple dogs at the rescue’s main location. Ginger eats very well and all in one sitting rather than nibbling. She has been eating 1 to 1 ½ measured cup of kibble, twice a day, (equals 2-3 cups daily) plus a rawhide chew in the evening. As she gets older, she may cut down at bit. The home that we seek for Ginger has at least one other dog (either boy or girl) who is interested in not only companionship, but play as well. A yard is a huge plus.

Ginger is spayed, de-wormed, vaccinated including rabies, and micro-chipped. If you are interested in Ginger, please contact Angels Heart Dog Rescue at adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com.
